1. F.A.B. –Is your idea a Feature, an Application or a Business? Store photos on the Internet, share them, and email them to friends. That’s just a feature. Put enough features together and you have an Application. Put enough applications together that provides viable solutions that improve people’s lives – that’s a business. Dan Lok Companies invest in internet businesses OR start-ups with a solid plan that will turn a feature or application into a business.
2. Active Investors –We are active investors. We always work directly with our companies and usually sit on the board. We are looking for companies who we can add value and leverage our contacts and add synergy. We’ve found that our returns are much higher when we contribute to the success of our investees.
3. Scalable Business Model – We invest in companies that are scalable, meaning companies with a built-in capability and infrastructure to cope and perform under an increased or expanding business volume. Any business will eventually reach a size where it no longer can scale. The scalability of your business depends upon the market size and your market share. These projections should be figured out in your business model. When it comes to scalability, we are looking for 2 things: First, companies where the costs of each dollar made make should be going down. Secondly, businesses that operate using an effective and lean crew. Duplication and redundancy eat into business profits. If your business requires a big team of employees to survive and grow, then it isn’t scalable.
4. Riches in Niches – We prefer in invest in internet start-ups in niche markets. You must be able to articulate who is your ideal customer? How many of them are out there? How are you going to reach them? What are their frustrations? What is your solution?
5. Focus Five –We invest in start-ups with a well-research growth plan. (Focus 5 rules.) The one qualifying question we ask all potential investees is:
“How you are going to achieve $5 million dollars in revenue within five years of being in business with less than five direct competitors?”
6. Passionate People –We don’t necessarily always invest in the most experienced and the most talented people. In fact, we have sometimes found this limiting the growth of a new venture primarily because experienced people tend to operate inside a box, i.e. they like to do things a certain way and are less open to new innovative ideas. It’s this kind of passion that fuels them, gives them energy, that drives them to constantly looking for ways to improve on their business.
