Regardless of what job you have, the company you work for or industry you go into, there is one common thing you will encounter – people. Dealing with people and interacting with them is inevitable, that is why I believe these 5 skills are the most important skills to learn while going through a career transition so you can fit in anywhere.
1. Communication Skills
The ability to effectively and clearly communicate your thoughts is one of the most invaluable skills to learn. There are 3 ways you can improve your communication skills:
The first and most widely used form of communication is speaking. Speaking is a skill that can be improved through the use of tonality, pronunciation and how loud your voice is when you speak. People who are good speakers are able to influence and build trust with other people, due to their ability to clearly communicate their thoughts. Those who take their speaking skills to the highest level can go on to become public speakers at large events and seminars.
The second form of communication is through the written word. In the business world, this could be things such as blogs, cover letters, resumes, emails and copywriting. It is a skill that can be used to generate a high income, and was the first high income skill I learned when I was at a young age. For those who are quieter or introverted, writing is a great alternative to speaking.
The third form of communication and possibly the most important is listening. Being a good listener is rare in today’s world – people are always talking over one another and trying to make their opinions heard. Those who are good listeners are well liked by their peers, due to their ability to make people feel understood. Combine listening with the ability to ask the right questions, and you’ve discovered the high income skill of closing.
In any company or business, there are other people you work with. Teamwork is the ability to get along with and complement your coworkers or associates. For example, suppose your coworker is very good at communicating using writing, but is a bit on the quiet side when it comes to speaking. If you are good at speaking, but lack skills in writing, the two of you would make a good team – able to cover each other’s weaknesses while leveraging your strengths.
Leadership is the ability to influence and lead a group of people to follow your instructions. CEO’s, executive directors and managers are all examples of where leadership comes into play.
Good leaders are able to take the initiative when there are new tasks, are efficient at organizing and seeing the strengths of each individual, dissolving conflict when it arises and holds themselves accountable for successes and failures. Leaders inspire others to do their best, and lead by example.
4. Problem Solving
Problem solving is also known as critical thinking. In life, business and relationships, there are going to be challenges and obstacles that come up. The ability to think critically about these issues, and come up with an effective solution is what separates successful people from mediocre ones.
The faster you can solve problems and the better you are at doing so, the more you learn and grow as a person in all areas of your life.
5. Lifelong Learner
The last and perhaps most important skill to have is being a lifelong learner. Earlier in this article, I briefly mentioned that the best skills to learn during a career transition isn’t actually a skill, but a mindset.
Most people like being comfortable. They will become good at something to a certain point, then stop improving. They’re comfortable at that current point, and see no reason to continue improving.
However, being a lifelong learner means that you are humble. No matter how successful you may be, you are always constantly looking for ways to improve. The best leaders and most successful people I know are never content with where they are at. They are lifelong learners, and people that display this mindset are highly desired in any company they go into – because they are constantly pushing their limits and reaching their fullest potential.
As a result, where others may be content at where they currently are, the lifelong learner is always improving.
