Everyone was born with a unique talent that defines them. Some people have gifts in handiwork. While others excel in doing hard mathematics and complex equations. Your unique talent is specific to you and will help you discover a career that is best suited to your liking.
A talent is a skill set or activity that comes to you with ease. Your natural talent distinguishes you from others in the crowd. And provides an easier learning curve for career development.
Take a look at celebrities, athletes, and entrepreneurs – they are all able to achieve mass amounts of success. What do you think gave them the ability to do it?
The secret ingredient that fast-tracked their success is their natural-born talent. Using their talent, they are able to get success and fulfillment.
For example. Stephen Curry discovered his natural aptitude for basketball at a young age. He entered the NBA in 2009, and became the starting point guard for the Warriors.
Ed Sheeran developed a musical aptitude as a young boy. He played guitar on local streets and in malls to showcase his skills. Today, Ed Sheeran has sold over 26 million albums and 100 million singles worldwide.
Leonardo Dicaprio developed an early interest in acting. He started his career on television in the early 1980’s. Today, he is an American actor and producer with films earning upwards of 7.2 billion dollars. He is eight times in the rankings for the world’s highest-paid actors.
Now, don’t feel discouraged if you did not discover your unique talent at a young age. It’s not always easy to identify. Most people, as a matter of fact, start their careers at a late stage of life. Your age has no impact on whether you can live your dream-life.
Following A Road of Your Unique Talent
Picture this in your head.
You’re driving home after a long workday. You’re tired, aggravated, and can’t wait to lie back and watch the new season of your favorite TV show. But right before you pull into your driveway, something you notice throws you off guard. Your neighbor bought a brand new car. As a matter of fact, it’s the car you’ve always dreamed of.
You rush to check it out. The paintwork, the rims, the interior – it’s exactly the way you pictured it. But how on earth did your neighbor afford it? You head on over to his door in search of an answer to one question. What does he do for a living?
After talking with him about the car, you find out he works as a chartered accountant throughout the day.
You head on back to your house to look at the requirements for becoming an accountant. Now you think it through, and decide to follow the footsteps of your neighbor. This is when you decide you’re going to become an accountant.
You enroll in an online course and sign up for many classes. But something doesn’t feel right. You’re struggling to understand the content. The theories don’t come easy to you, and none of the math equations make sense. You keep pushing yourself and end up scoring an F on your first test.
So what exactly went wrong?
A Path Designed For You
You see, everyone was born with specific talents and skillsets. Your neighbor found his unique talent working with numbers and studying data. You yet, might not have a natural aptitude for working with numbers. Thus the topics revolving around math are more difficult for you to understand.
The point we are trying to convey is that everyone should follow a path in their unique talent. People are able to find success in specific niches. But their successes do not imply that you have to follow the same footsteps.
Your talent is unique to you and is what will help you excel in areas in which others struggle. This is where you will find success and achieve the level of fulfillment you deserve.
For example, people like Lebron James discovered his unique talent in basketball. Ed Sheeran and Celine Dieon discovered unique talents in singing. And John Carmack and Chris Sawyer discovered their unique talents in programming.
It does not mean you have to become a basketball player, singer or programmer. You have to be truthful to yourself and pursue the skills and activities that are unique to you.
Now don’t get us wrong. You can accumulate wealth in areas outside of your unique talent. But if you are in search of purpose and fulfillment, then a unique talent should best help you.Use your talents. They are precious gifts given to you to put to work. - Robyn O’ Brien Click To Tweet
You may have already found your talent. It might be playing soccer, fixing cars, or solving math problems. Others still have difficulty discovering their unique talent. If you are still searching, chances are you haven’t nurtured your hidden talent enough.
From the day you were born, a seed of hidden talents and abilities instilled inside of you. Some people’s seeds blossom at a young age and they discover their potential. Others are still growing, with their seeds beginning to sprout.
If you are still in the growing stage. Then the best way to discover your unique talent is by exploring new opportunities. Doing so will allow you to see the bigger picture. You’ll see areas of strength and areas which appear to be a challenge. The areas of strength are generally indicators of where your unique talent lies.
As once said by Willem Dafoe. “You have to lose yourself to find yourself.”
Let’s now dive into 7 questions to help determine your unique talents. Try and find a quiet place if possible, as these questions will need you to dig deep.
1. What Were Your Unique Talents As A Child?
Think back to the early years of your childhood, around when you were between 3 and 16 years of age. What did you like to do?
- Were you fond or running around?
- What sports did you like to play?
- What activities did you like to engage in?
There is a reason why you engaged in certain activities as a child. You did so because you have a natural pull towards it.
If you were always interested in sports such as basketball or soccer. Then your unique talent might be present somewhere around there. The same holds true if you participated in arts and crafts.
Your childhood gave you the freedom to explore. You’re introduced to many tasks and activities for the first time. You get a feel for the activities that appeal to you. While gaining an understanding of which tasks are not in your interest.
You can think of your childhood as the ground zero for discovering your unique talent. You can also make a list of these attributes and see if the tasks align with what you do in the present.
Many of the activities actually remain instilled in your brain as you age. Some you still partake in to pass the time. So if you can’t remember the past very well, you can always look at your current interests. This brings us to the next question.
2. What Are You Passionate About As An Adult?
Here’s a quick story about how Sifu Dan discovered his passion as an adult.
When Sifu Dan first started off as an entrepreneur. He was afraid of how people would view his accent during public speeches. To combat this, he turned to Toast Masters for a way of improving his speaking abilities and confidence.
As Dan observed other people involved. And gained a natural passion for public speaking. It became a great way for him to share his story and educate the world through his message. This brought him good feelings, which is why he continues to speak in public. These positive emotions helped him develop a passion.
So ask yourself: which skills and or activities fill you with positive emotion? Do you love building programs and watching them come to life? You find fulfillment in playing sports? Does painting give you a special feeling of peace and gratitude?
Keep in mind that Sifu Dan was only able to discover his passion for attending ToastMasters. You may need to get out there and explore, so don’t hesitate to try something new.
3. What Do People Compliment You For?
Everyone is born with a unique talent or skill set. But, sometimes, our unique talent is visible in plain sight without us even knowing
ToastMasters has a great component. Which allows peers to provide feedback to one another. It’s a small written component aiming to help you advance your skills.
When Sifu Dan got his piece of paper, everyone said he is a natural-born speaker. This blew his mind. Dan could never think of himself as a natural speaker. He believed that his abilities were a result of hard work and commitment.
Once Dan had received enough compliments about his speeches. He realized that there was something special about his capabilities. It was something he could further develop into a powerful skill.
The main reason compliments are important is that they provide a sense of validation. Think about what might happen if you decide to pursue a skill without knowing if you’re good enough. Do you think it will go well? Most likely not.
Go through your week and pay attention to the compliments from your peers or family members. There is most likely a hidden attribute that you haven’t recognized. And that other people can help you discover.
4. What Are You Good At?
When going through your day, pay attention to things that come easy to you. For example, let’s say one of your door handles is getting stuck. Do you have a natural instinct of grabbing tools to fix it? Or, let’s say you’re cooking dinner. Do you follow a recipe book? Or do you have a natural aptitude for building flavors?
Things that come easy to you do not need large amounts of thinking. It’s subconscious competence that allows you to do them.
The thing that’s easy for you might not be easy for someone else. This is why doing something you’re gifted for is so powerful. It may come from your DNA or the way your brain works. It might even come from the way you problem-solve.
5. What Do You Find Easy That Is Hard For Others?
Finding something that comes easy will help you identify your unique talent. Again, go through your day and identify which tasks might be among these.
The reason for comparing your skills to others is to see which areas you can excel in. The world consists of a competition, so sticking out in a big crowd requires uniqueness.
Let’s say you want to become a soccer player. According to a FIFA big count survey. There are approximately 265 million soccer players worldwide. This equates to almost 4% of the world’s population. If you want to stand out and outperform everyone else. You need a stronger natural aptitude than others in your industry.
In soccer, you should be one of the best offensive or defensive players on your team. This will help you ensure industry is for you.
6. What Activities Make You Lose Track of Time?
We are not talking about binge-watching shows or playing video games. Nor are we talking about hanging with friends or partying. The activities of focus are ones that can add value to other people’s lives. These have to do with helping people and solving problems. This is the area where your talent lies.
Picture a hot, July summer day. In the backyard, you notice your deck needs a paint job. You run to the local store, grab supplies, and spend your entire evening painting the deck. If your mind is on painting the deck and you find fulfillment. Then your unique talent might have to do with painting.
Now, don’t confuse this with activities you focus on. Activities that make you lose time need minimal thinking. It’s something you gravitate towards. If you have a report due at midnight, you might lose track of time from the number of hours spent working. This is something you remain focused on, rather than an activity that makes you lose track of time.
7. Who Do You Want To Help?
People gravitate towards activities because of an inner drive or desire to pursue a task. A good way to determine your unique talent. Is by identifying the group of people who you have an emotional connection to. Or in other words, you need to identify the people you want to help.
A commonplace for people to volunteer is at a local hospital or Sick Kids foundation. If you have a desire to help people in this area, your unique talent might be in the medical sector. This could imply careers such as a doctor or a nurse.
Or, you want to help kids get an education, and your unique talent might revolve around teaching. Professions such as teacher or professor might be best suited for you. The point of this is to determine how you can leave an impact on the world, as a legacy for future generations.“Caring about others, running the risk of feeling, and leaving an impact on people. Brings happiness.”- Harold Kushner Click To Tweet
Bonus: What If You Still Don’t Know Your Unique Talent?
So, what if you still don’t know your unique talent? Where do you go from here?
If you find yourself in this situation. You are likely conditioned to have a lifestyle of being average. You are in a phase of mediocrity. And are in an environment where greatness is not cherished or celebrated. So what do you do?
This is a case where you have to embark on a self-discovery process. You have to start from a blank slate and open your mind to who you are as a person. The best way to identify this is by enrolling in a martial arts program.
Martial arts are within the mindset of self-discovery. You face challenges to learn about yourself. As you develop discipline and focus that is not accessible from day one.
