Would you believe us if we told you that it’s possible to become a confident English speaker with a simple practice trick?
There are many challenges that come with learning a new language. With so many different rules, exceptions and contradictions, it can be quite overwhelming at times.
However, we have learned that how well somebody communicates in English has very little to do with how well they can speak the language. Instead, it has a lot to do with their attitude towards learning.
According to Babbel:
Out of the world’s approximately 8 billion inhabitants, 1.5 billion speak English – that’s 20% of the Earth’s population.
Have you ever felt anxious or nervous by the thought of talking to someone over the phone in English? Or have you ever felt sick to your stomach by the idea of speaking in front of your peers?
These feelings are normal. However, it’s scientifically proven that when you are stressed out, your brain’s creative centre shuts down. If you want to retain what you learn, you need to create an environment that is stress free.
If you want to become a fluent English speaker, you might feel like it’s a huge mountain to climb. You might feel like it’s going to take so much work that you don’t have the time for it. We are here today to share with you that while there is no shortcut to successfully learning the English language, it does not have to be stressful.

It goes without saying that English was not his first language. In fact, when you read Unlock It you will learn that it wasn’t even his second language. But because of the strategies he followed, he is now a master in English, communications, and sales.
Dan calls this strategy the 1-3-1 formula to language mastery.
Being able to communicate and speak with conviction and certainty has changed Dan’s life. If practiced diligently, this formula can also help you transform your life and become a confident English speaker too.
In this article, you will learn the three part formula that Dan Lok used to become a confident English Speaker.
Choose a Role Model
The first step to becoming a fluent English speaker is to select a role model that you want to learn from.
Having a role model is an important aspect of our lives. They help us to become a better version of ourselves, and give us a sense of purpose when things are not going our way.
John Wooden, American basketball player and coach said,
Having a role model is one of the most powerful forms of education.
For example, take a newborn Lion. From the moment they are born, they have to fend for themselves. The stakes could not be any higher, so they look up to their superiors to learn how to survive.
This simple example can be related back to learning English. You have to select a role model you want to learn from and imitate. Someone who projects themselves in such a way that inspires you to take action and improve on yourself.
When it comes to learning English, there are hundreds of well known speakers out there. If you are ever unsure if the speaker is right for you, start off by listening to their Youtube videos, podcasts or audio books.
From there, you need to evaluate whether or not the person is the right role model for you. Using the three step checklist outlined below, you will be on track to selecting the right role model, and becoming a fluent English speaker in no time.
What Do You Look For In A Role Model?
If you’re serious about becoming a confident English speaker, the first step is to select a role model. However, if you’re ever unsure what to look for in one, we’ve provided a three part checklist for you to follow.
1. You like the way they speak
When listening to your potential role model, ask yourself if you like the way they speak. Is this the way you would also like to present yourself to other people?
2. You like their tonality
Tonality refers to the way their voice sounds when they express their feelings. While it may sound like a simple criteria, it makes a huge difference in the way the message comes across to the other person.
3. You like how they modulate their voice
Close your eyes and carefully listen to their voice, do you like how they adjust it to deliver their points? Do they change the tune of their voice when they ask questions, or deliver powerful messages?
These important yet simple questions will help you select the perfect role model when learning how to become a fluent English speaker.
Once you have selected the right role model for you, take a moment and pick one line that they say that stands out to you. It can be a line that has a lot of meaning behind it, or a line that was delivered exceptionally well by the speaker. From there, it’s time to move onto the second step.
Listen, Pause and Practice
The second step to becoming a fluent English speaker is to practice saying the one line you selected from your role model.
Once you’ve selected one line from your role model. The next step is to learn that one line and then practice it three times using your own voice. From there, repeat the process again. Listen to that one line, and then practice it again three times at your own pace.
By consistently practicing that single line, you will leave a footprint in your subconscious mind. You will begin to develop that person’s habits and start to deliver your words with confidence and conviction. The distance between you and everything you ever want is your words. Click To Tweet
You might be asking yourself, why don’t I just find an English teacher?
Many publications on the internet suggest you pay top dollar to learn English from a certified teacher. However, we believe that the traditional forms of learning can actually lead you to being worse off than you were before.
Why? The answer is simple. Learning how to fluently speak English also requires you to have a stellar mindset. Whether or not you’re given the tools to to succeed, if you choose to use them is a completely different story.
Chances are, you probably will never have an emotional connection to a textbook. By learning from someone you aspire to be like, you will be emotionally setting yourself up for success.
Practice Makes Perfect
We can both agree that when learning how to become a fluent English speaker, practice is the key to improving. However, sometimes we can get frustrated by how difficult the learning curve can be.
Research shows that the way that you practice is much more important than how long you spend practicing. Below we have highlighted five tips you can use to ensure you can get the most out of your practicing.
Identify your goal
Start off by identifying what your goal is from the start. For example, are you looking to be able to speak a complete sentence without stuttering?
Aim for progress rather than perfection
Instead of beating yourself up for not getting the line perfect, live in the present and recognize how far you have come.
Spend more time practicing the things you find difficult
If you find a specific portion of the sentence difficult, spend some extra time practicing it until it becomes second nature to you.
Take a break
Practicing for hours upon hours is both unproductive and unhealthy. Take breaks throughout the day to rest and gather your thoughts.
After an eventful day of practicing your English, take a moment to reward yourself for all of your hard work.
Criss Jami, American author and poet once said,
If you want to find the real competition, just look in the mirror.
Using these five tips, you will become a fluent English speaker very quickly.
Now you might be wondering, how long should I practice everyday? Some experts suggest you fit in your practicing to your schedule. However, we believe that consistent hard work is the key to success. Next we will cover what a great daily practice routine looks like.
Perfect your Daily Routine
The third step to becoming a fluent English speaker is to practice for one hour a day.
We’re sure you’ve heard the saying practice makes perfect. While this is a well known statement widely used by many influencers around the world, we instead like to use the saying consistently is the key to mastery.Consistency is the key to mastery. Click To Tweet
A great way to visualize what this saying means is to think about working out. For example, let’s say your goal was to gain more muscle, so you dedicate one hour a day strictly for working out.
However, after one week you start to get tired of the gym and start making excuses to not go. You tell yourself that it can wait, or that you worked so hard last week and it’s okay to take a break for a day.
But then what happens? You miss one day, and then another, and before you know it’s been one month and you’re back to square one. You’re now stuck in a never ending cycle. Everyday you tell yourself that you will hop back on track and commit to your goals and then after a week you quit. You are simply inconsistent.
According to Reliable Plant,
Of the 20 percent of the population that sets goals, roughly 70 percent fails to achieve the goals they may have set for themselves.
It’s one thing to set a goal, and another to deliver on it. Consistency is the key to becoming a fluent English speaker.
The Principles of Consistency
Every single one of us has the potential to be so much more than we already are. Throughout our lives, we stumble upon so many initiatives for growth, prosperity, and well-being.
After the initial hype dies down, it’s often difficult to be consistent and stay with the flow. When learning how to become a confident English speaker, consistency is your best friend.
Earlier in this article, we suggested that you find a mentor, choose a phrase that resonates with you, and to practice that phrase three times out loud for an hour a day.
As simple as this sounds, maintaining a consistent schedule can be very challenging. A strategy that Dan teaches all of his students to do is to segment your day.
What do you think he means by segmenting your day?
The answer here is simple. In order to become a fluent English speaker, you need to devote specific amounts of time strictly to improving your craft. Segmenting is the opposite idea of thinking about everything you need to do in a given day.
How would you feel if you woke up in the morning and was instantly overwhelmed with every single task you had to do for the day. Don’t you think this would make you even more unproductive overall? This level of overkill can cause you to crash and burn out very quickly. This destructive mindset is not the way to go.
There are a variety of ways to segment your day. A simple strategy could involve preparing the night before, and writing a to do list for the next day. This will ensure you approach your day with mini-goals in mind which will lead to you having a much more productive and fulfilling day.
