Gamification in education has proven to be a very effective way to teach the modern student. If you’ve been following me for awhile, you’ll know that I do not advocate for traditional education because I think it’s archaic and ineffective. I know there’s a faster, easier, more effective and more modern way to learn today’s high demand skills.

By definition, gamification in education is utilizing video game elements to incentivize students to learn new information. By gamifying education, students are interacting with classroom material in a new and fun way, and retaining the information they learn for longer.

Gamification at its core is simply utilizing elements of modern video games outside of their original context. If the common consensus is that traditional learning is boring and student engagement is difficult to achieve, then gamification in education aims to change this.

I have always been against traditional education, not only because it’s typically boring and unmotivating, but also because it neglects to teach high-income skills and instead focuses on learning outdated skills, or chasing high-income jobs you’ll probably hate.

If gamification in education is opening people’s eyes to the power of digital learning and helping people realize the need for modernization in education, I’m all for it.

What Exactly is Gamification in Education?

Gamification in education is the application of trendy game mechanics into non-gaming contexts (such as learning) to improve a student’s engagement, passion, learning and problem-solving skills. Points, badges, exploration, challenges, mysteries and rewards are some examples of how game-like techniques are now being used in modern learning.

I want you to imagine that you are a student gaining experience points or “XP” every time you solve a math problem correctly. Instead of viewing a failed test as a closed entity, you may be more inclined to view the score as an opportunity to improve. 

After all, most video game levels aren’t being completed on the first try all the time. Our minds, however, are being incentivized to gain XP (experience points) from completing each level. So, instead of giving up, your brain encourages you to learn from your mistakes and try again. 

While creating gamification of learning isn’t always seamless, it can prove to be an effective way to boost a student’s sense of self-confidence while learning. 

Moreover, gamification in education is currently growing. The demand for this type of education will also keep growing. Therefore, it’s a good idea to incorporate its methods to keep up with society at large. 

According to a report from research firm Research and Markets, entitled Global Education Gamification Market 2016 – 2020, the gamification of education in the year 2015 was marked at $93 million. However, this figure is projected to skyrocket by the year 2020, expecting to reach around $1.2 billion. In other words, gamification in education is showing no signs of slowing down.

The global e-learning market, such as gamification in education, is one of the fastest-growing markets in the world. We are seeing outdated, traditional learning methods be modernized though advancement in technology and integration of virtual learning tools.

Since the development of mobile devices and the dawn of the internet, the demand for gamification has boomed. In fact, according to The Huffington Post, over 350 companies including the likes of NBC and Panera have invested in major gamification programs for their respective media. 

Gamification has many broad definitions within itself. You may be wondering why it’s relevant to your everyday life. This technology is only projected to grow exponentially, and will continue to restructure how we function as a society – and how we learn new skills. 

For example, our communication with apps alone has changed drastically over the past decade. You may have noticed some of your social media apps, like Instagram or Facebook, employ what is called an “infinite scroll”.

This technical improvement rewards the user for seeking out more and more information. Did you know that the development of the scroll is considered a form of gamification? 

However, gamification is not just limited to improving tech for silicon valley. Innovative educators have begun to incorporate the basic principles of gamification and online education, due to the demand for more modern techniques in learning. 

Gamification of education is here to stay, but you may be wondering, Is too much use of AI a bad thing? How will this affect us as a society?

Some tech experts are skeptical. Futurist leader and philosopher Gray Scott said, “The real question is, when will we draft an artificial intelligence bill of rights? What will that consist of? And who will get to decide that?”

There’s no doubt that the influx of online learning is intimidating. However, it is up to society to implement gamification in education with respect and caution. 

As long as we pay close attention to our actions, gamification and the future of education is nothing but bright. 

Reinventing the Way We Educate Youth

Our education system has evolved very little since the 1950s for the most part. This is incredibly problematic, as it largely based on an industrial factory model. Clearly, this model is no longer suitable for the needs of today’s society. 

Imagine a successful business creating a product the exact same way without any evolution. If you’re like me, you’ll find visualizing such a product is pretty difficult. Obviously, it’s virtually impossible to stick around without evolving for over half a century. 

However, for some reason, our society has largely ignored the need for evolution when it comes to education. Perhaps this is one of our greatest shortcomings as a society. How are we supposed to expect future generations to adapt when the education system refuses to adapt to them? Why aren’t more traditional educators realizing the need to teach more modern, in-demand, current skills in a more modern and engaging manner? It’s no wonder why so many of today’s youth are realizing they could future-proof themselves by skipping traditional post-secondary education.

Like it or not, we live in a digital age. Gamification in education has never been more popular, and for good reason: It works. 

Does Traditional Education Cause an Engagement Crisis?

Education is fun and engaging in kindergarten and elementary school, but after grade 6, it typically becomes rigorous and boring, and students become unmotivated – especially in high school and in college.

In his Ted Talk entitled The Power of Gamification in Education, school teacher Scott Hebert said that by the time he was in grade 6, his educational experience went down the proverbial toilet. He says it’s because this is when “Play, fun and discovery-based learning is eliminated in favor of worksheets and straight rows and silence and order and regime.” Hebert then explained how creativity and innovation aren’t typically encouraged in traditional education. “The education system is in an engagement crisis . . . These kids are bored,” said Hebert, following up with, “They need a reason to care.”

Would gamifying education help them care, and help reignite their passion? Yes.

It’s a no-brainer that the students of today are much different than those of the 1950s. In general, global attention span continues to narrow. With an expectation of instant gratification being a modern-day epidemic, our average amount of initial focus holds at a measly 8 seconds

Generational differences aside, there’s no denying that students growing up in this decade have access to unprecedented technology. Mobile smartphones, touchscreen devices, and even the internet have dramatically shifted the way we learn as a society. Again, instant gratification and impatience can be partially blamed on the advancements of technology.

What makes today’s students so different from past generations? Well, for one thing, they’ve become largely uninterested with traditional means of education. It’s understandable that those growing up in a society that checks their phone about 58 times a day would no longer be captivated by a plain lecture, order, regime, silent rows, and the chalkboard.

A couple of teachers are taking technological evolution by storm and paving the way for gamification in education. Here are some ways teachers are changing the ways future generations learn:

1. Replacing Grades for XP (Experience Points)

Lee Sheldon of Indiana University experimented with swapping out grades for XP points. Implementing a similar system will encourage students to see learning as an opportunity to grow. A lower grade on a test is no longer a degrading symbol of failure. Rather, low XP motivates a student to try for higher points in the future, encouraging them to study.  

2. Providing Choices

Providing choices in education is a sure-fire way to engage students and cater to their specific learning style. If a teacher has gamification software, they should make sure they allow the student to make choices within a virtual setting.

If education software is inaccessible, they can try to offer a variety of assignment choices for their students. This small change can boost the student’s engagement and help build their confidence when approaching their learning.

3. Rewarding Mastered Concepts

Gamifying the classroom doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, it can be as simple as rewarding students with some sort of virtual badge or trinket for mastering a certain task. This method seem largely unchanged from traditional learning practices. However, it may be the extra push a student needs to learn a concept. 

Due to the advent of resources available through online education such as Youtube education, teachers are now able to share their innovative teaching techniques more than ever. If any of today’s educators are still skeptical, all they need to do is research the effects of gamification for adults. They can use their own personal experiences to envision how an evolved and modernized classroom might work for their students.

Gamification in education is an awesome way to prepare students for the future, but it certainly comes with some pitfalls. You may be wondering why people might be hesitant to adopt gamification in education. For maximum clarity, here are the pros and cons of gamification in education. 

PROS:

  • Allows students to become more technologically literate
  • When taught properly, can teach students to appreciate the process of learning itself 
  • Can help globalize and diversify the pool of educated students with increased online learning
  • Online learning means students can learn from anywhere 
  • Seeks to update a largely outdated system
  • Prepares students for the inevitable development of AI
  • Builds up student self-confidence
  • Can boost student information retention 
  • Helps students stay engaged

CONS

  • Students expect a certain degree of instant gratification whenever gamification is not implemented with care.
  • Incorporating new technology into low-income environments may be costly and difficult to fundraise
  • Teachers must be careful to monitor the gamification process carefully, as it may not speak to all types of learners. In order to avoid this, traditional education methods should not be abandoned altogether. Rather, the process should be infused partially with gamification to keep students engaged and technologically literate.

The Role of AI in Education 

So, how do we know that this technological evolution is necessary? Generally speaking, we naturally evolve with the times. Once we have a piece of effective technology, it’s unlikely we’ll abandon it as a society. Hence, the only option is to evolve together.

As said by tech giant Elon Musk, “America is a nation of explorers… people who came here from other parts of the world that chose to give up the known in favor of the unknown. The United States is a distillation of the human spirit of exploration.” 

There’s no way to avoid the evolution of technology. According to market research firm Tractica, AI at large is expected to increase by approximately 154% over the next decade. How we run our society at large naturally affects how we educate our student body. 

It’s not surprising that AI has a projected 48% growth rate in education alone over the next 3 years. Though the development of AI at large is heavily debated, it’s important that our future generations are technologically literate. 

AI can help individualize curriculum for students. This would mean giving each and every kid a personalized learning plan based on their learning styles. Ultimately, this is the goal of education. However, it’s largely unreasonable for one teacher to acclimate perfectly to the learning eccentricities of 20+ students at one time. 

Modern teachers should embrace AI for not only the betterment of their students but also of themselves. Moral debates aside, it appears for the time being that gamification in education has only helped students fall in love with learning as a whole.

Today’s Students Are Digital Learners, Not Textbook Learners

Why have today’s youth fallen in love with gamification in education? Because today’s students love online learning with a modern user experience. Today’s students are digital learners, which means that they prefer interactive, visual and engaging learning. 

Archaic methods of education include things like broadcast learning. This is when a teacher delivers a lecture to passive, bored, and unengaged students who are checking their phones instead of listening. It’s when a boring monologue is delivered in a traditional classroom with straight rows of uninterested students. 

Education is Progressing into the Online Space

Gamification in education is one example of how education is progressing into the online space. Youtube education is another example. Online courses that are short, engaging, and teach high-income skills are becoming more popular as traditional education becomes outed as being too outdated and ineffective.
