Starting a business is never easy. But there are a few reasons why starting out as a copywriter might be a good idea.
Before you ask yourself, “How hard is it to start a copywriting business?” I want to ask you, why do you want to start a copywriting business in the first place? Maybe it’s because you are aware that copywriting is extremely in-demand, and more in demand than ever before?
Or perhaps it interests you because a career in copywriting doesn’t require a college degree, and the cost of starting out is very low? Or is it that you’re aware that copywriting is a high-income skill which allows you to possibly earn a nice 6-figure or even 7-figure income?
Those are all good reasons to start a copywriting business. Still, you have to be aware that starting and running a business is never easy. If you want to own your own business to gain more free time, then you are probably on the wrong path. Running a business requires time and effort. And to make your business successful, you have to make sacrifices. In the first few years, chances are you will have less free time than before. As they say, No pain, no gain.

How difficult it really is to start a copywriting business depends on a few factors. First of all, it depends on your mindset and mental state. Are you actually ready to run a business? How willing are you to take risks and make sacrifices? How well can you master your skills and harness them for the success of your business?
Second of all, it does depend on your current skill level. How strong are your copywriting skills? What kind of value can you deliver to the marketplace?
And finally, it also depends on the market. Does the market value your skill? How can you choose a market that will make it easier for you to succeed?
When you answer those questions, you will notice a couple of things. There are a few reasons why starting a copywriting business could be challenging. But there are also some indicators telling us that starting a copywriting business is comparably easy. Let’s dive deeper into this.

How hard is it to start a copywriting business? Some people would argue that it’s quite a challenge. Running a business is never easy. It requires you to be very aware, very systematic and very strategic. When you run a business you either get clients, or you don’t eat.
You can’t rely on luck, hopes, and dreams to magically bring you clients. You need a plan in place but at the same time, you have to be flexible. It’s critical to find a balance.
When you run a business, you are always “on the clock”. The lines between work and life get blurred. Evenings and weekends are no longer free for you to watch Netflix and chill. Now, evenings and weekends are spent replying to business-related emails, doing business-related research, and running your operation. When you want to own a business of any sort, you have to be aware of that.
Starting a copywriting business is hard if your mindset isn’t quite there yet. These days, so many people get frustrated with their boss and think they can do a better job of running a business. They start a business because they are fed up and want to take back control over their time.
But that alone isn’t a good enough reason to start your own business. Because when such a person decides to become an entrepreneur, what happens? They are actually not cut out to make it. They aren’t business owners, they are employees with an entrepreneurial aspiration. So, they make their life a lot harder than it has to be.

When you start your own business, you will be rewarded with fulfilling work most of the time. But you also have to be able to manage yourself 100%. You have to be in charge of your time and money. You need strict time management skills to make sure you use your time wisely.
There might be times where you can’t just go out and spend your money on fun. Can you hold yourself back from impulse purchases? You also have to think about how to handle clients who maybe are a bit harder to deal with. What do you do if you get sick? As a business owner, you also want to be comfortable with taking risks. How well do you take that?
These are all questions that boil down to your mental state. Really think this through, before you start your copywriting business.
It’s Harder When You Lack the Skills
Now, copywriting is a skill that can be learned and developed. It has nothing to do with talent, and actually, anybody can learn it. How do I know? Because I started my career as a copywriter, even though I flunked English in school – twice.
If I could do it, then you can do it. But, you have to be willing to learn and develop your skills. Too many copywriters have a big ego. They don’t take any criticism and they are stuck in their ego. When your skill level isn’t high enough, then you will have trouble with starting a copywriting business.
After all, how do you find clients if your work can’t produce results for them? They won’t pay you huge sums of money for copywriting if there isn’t enough value in what you do. You can’t fool the market. You will get as much in return as the value that you bring to the marketplace.
So, before you eagerly start your copywriting business, check if your skill level is up to par. I deeply believe that all money problems are skill problems at the root. This is great news, though, because you can always learn more and develop your skills.
How do you know if your skill is good enough? You have two options. Either you find some clients and test your copywriting in the marketplace with those clients. See if it produces results for your client. Or, you find a mentor. Find another copywriter who you look up to because of how successful they are, and learn from them. Chances are, a copywriter who already has a successful business will be able to tell you where you need to improve.
Starting a copywriting business can be infinitely more difficult if you don’t know your market. Or, equally bad, if you pick the wrong market. I see so many copywriters selling themselves short by tapping into underpaid markets. They set up accounts at freelancing websites and have to compete on price.
Don’t get me wrong, such sites are a great opportunity if you are just starting out. You can easily earn your first few dollars there. But if you want to start a successful business, then chances are you have to choose another market.
I know of freelancer copywriters who got paid $15 for a 1,000-word article. Consider how many articles they would have to write just to earn minimum wage and make ends meet? That wouldn’t be very sustainable.
If you, however, select a market that values your work, then you can make more money and actually sustain yourself. This ties back in with your skill level. If your skill level is high and you are the only person who can deliver a certain result, then you can charge more money.
Don’t Be a Jack Of All Trades
How hard is it to start a copywriting business? It will definitely be very hard if you try to be everything for everyone. You know that expression, Jack of all trades, master of none, right? Now, what do I mean by that? I’m referring to copywriters who try to be the best at everything. They offer landing pages, emails, articles, white papers, Facebook ads, social media posts – for all types of niches. Basically, they are spreading themselves thin. They are being a ‘Jack of all trades’ or a generalist, rather than positioning themselves as an expert in one niche area.
What you should do, is specialize. Perhaps you choose one or two niches that you are really passionate about. Choose a few copy types that you want to be the expert at.
Let me give you an example: You could be the to-go expert for email newsletters in the fitness industry for women who want to lose weight. That is very specific. And you can charge more for those emails because nobody else can do it as well as you can. You become extremely valuable to this particular niche marketplace, and you become viewed as an expert in that niche, and that’s great.
So, starting a copywriting business is very hard if you have the wrong expectations, if your skill isn’t fully developed, if you choose the wrong market or if you’re too general instead of specialized. Make sure to watch out for those things.

How Starting a Copywriting Business Could Be Easy
How hard is it to start a copywriting business? Well, it becomes easier when you are aware of a few things, like the things we just discussed as well as some other factors. Generally, thanks to the internet and the age we are living in, copywriting is highly in demand. Every company needs Facebook ads, email campaigns, landing page copy, website copy, and so on. There seems to be an endless demand for good copywriters. So why not supply that demand?
What’s more, copywriting is a high-income skill that doesn’t require you to get a degree. You don’t need to take on a student loan and get any 4-year degree from a college or University. You don’t have to use the money from your job to pay off your student loan debt.
With copywriting, you don’t have to wait for years to start making money. You can get results after a few weeks or just a few months. And the best part is that you can earn while you learn. What do I mean? Most copywriters already make decent money while they are still polishing their skills. Maybe they are shadowing under a master copywriter. Like any industry, copywriting follows certain trends and paradigms. When you start a business as a copywriter, you want to make sure that you stay in the game for years to come. Did you know that many successful direct mail copywriters couldn’t really keep up with the changes that happened to the industry after the emerge of the internet?
They were very good at their craft of writing direct mail (snail mail marketing letters) but they weren’t able to transfer their knowledge to the online world. Isn’t that unfortunate? But there some copywriters that were able to adjust. What sets these two types of copywriters apart? The answer is: Intuition and skill level.
As a successful copywriter, your skill is your base – you have to be able to transfer your knowledge and skill to any trend that is coming. This is only possible if you understand the basic principles of copywriting. So, developing your skills is crucial to running a successful copywriting business.
For skilled copywriters, starting a business is easier because they will always find clients more easily. When you are skilled, mentally prepared and know your target audience, then starting a copywriting business in 2020 is comparably easy.
Watch Out For Pitfalls
Now you might be thinking that the advantages of starting a copywriting business outweigh the downsides. But there is one last thing you want to be very aware of.
Starting a business requires money. Yes, even if the starting costs of a copywriting business are comparably low, you will still need some money to start with. It’s best to have some savings, in case your plan doesn’t work out and you don’t get clients right away.
What would you do if your business isn’t profitable for the first few months? How will you pay your rent and living costs? When I start anything – a business idea, a new project, really anything – I always ask myself “what could go wrong?” This isn’t because I’m pessimistic. It’s because I want to make sure that my plan is foolproof.
So, if you have no money to support yourself in case something goes wrong, then maybe you aren’t ready to start a business. What should you do instead?
Develop Your Skills Before You Start a Business
Perhaps you aren’t in a position to start a business right away. Maybe you have to rely on the consistent income from a regular job.
If that’s the case, here is my advice: Start earning money with copywriting as a side hustle first. Work on honing your copywriting skills. If you want to start a copywriting business, you need to have the funds, first. You can’t start a business without a safety net, or the funds that are necessary to start and run the business. You can get those funds by making money as a copywriter, and if you aren’t confident in your copywriting skills, you can learn by taking a short copywriting course.
Don’t start your business on a whim. As I mentioned before, having a business and being your own boss requires a lot of work and mental strength.
You can start earning a decent amount of income as a copywriter part-time. Later, when you have enough money, you start your business. For my students, I always recommend to work themselves up to an income from $10K a month. Once you reach that, starting a business is easier and you will likely be much more successful.

So, how hard is it to start a copywriting business in 2020? Timing-wise and industry-wise, it’s probably easier than ever before. Copywriting is currently in high demand, starting cost is low compared to other industries, and you could even work from home.
But as with any other business, there is no guarantee that it will succeed. The market is willing to pay for your skills. So before you start your business, you want to make sure you are skilled enough.
How Are Freelance Copywriters Hitting 6-Figures?
Now, of course, you could learn copywriting by yourself. Go through tons of online blogs and materials, and hope the best. Find a client and test if your copy is producing results. Learn by trial and error, so to say.
