So you want to become a 6 figure copywriter. Maybe you are just starting out, or you are looking to take your monthly income even higher.
In order to achieve this, you need to know something I call ‘The 3 Keys To Making A Higher Income’, that answers popular questions like “How do you make money as a copywriter” and “How do you hit that 6 figure income”.
It’s not only doable, it’s very possible. I did it in my early 20’s, so I know exactly what you are going through. And I want to help you achieve the same thing. So let’s begin, starting with number one.
1. Spend Less Time Hunting, And More Time Writing
Most struggling copywriters spend way too much time hunting and not writing. A lot of copywriters that I know spend a lot of time going to websites and looking for gigs. They spend a lot of time doing trivial tasks like hunting, negotiating, invoicing and going back and forth with the client. Everything that they do, they do except writing. They spend a majority of their time on things that don’t actually make them money. You make money as a copywriter by writing. You make money as a copywriter by writing. Look at how much time you spend on a weekly basis on writing versus everything else. By analyzing what you spend your time on, you will realize the reason why you’re not making the income that you want. Spend the majority of your time writing, instead of doing trivial tasks.
2. Write For Clients Who Can Afford To Pay You
This one may be obvious (duh). So then why do so many writers go to cheap job boards like Fiverr, looking for $5, $10 or $20 jobs?
These kinds of customers have a different mindset. They’re cheap and difficult to deal with. They’re the type that expect you do include everything and constantly piling on extra demands. And in the end they are still not happy with what you produce. All of the headache, hassle and time wasted – for a measly $5.
Let’s say you want to be a 6 figure copywriter, earning 100K a year. How many $5 jobs would you need to do in order to hit 100K?
Answer: A LOT!
Instead of being desperate and taking any job, look for clients that can afford you. Clients that can afford you don’t mind paying you a good rate, because they’re getting something valuable in return. They are making a return on their money. If you’re writing to produce results, such as emails and landing pages – if it converts and nets them more customers, revenue and results they are more than happy to pay you a premium price.
With good clients, you don’t have to worry about spending time hunting for jobs for negotiating a few dollars for your rate. They know that regardless if they pay you $1,000 or $2,000, you are making them 10x that in return.
Write for people who can afford to pay your rate. Realize that it’s who you write for, not just what you write.
3. Specialize Your Copywriting Skills
At the beginning of my copywriting career, I was writing for all kinds of businesses. I wrote for landscapers, plumbers, real estate professionals. And they would pay me anywhere from $100 – $400 to write an ad.
I remember that I would write them these lead generation ads, but I couldn’t charge them what I wanted. I couldn’t charge them what I thought I was worth. The problem was that these people didn’t understand marketing. They weren’t sophisticated business owners, that knew how to leverage copywriting in their business. When I decided to switch my focus to specializing in copy for certain businesses, now I could charge what I wanted.
I could do the same amount of work and spend the same amount of time. But now, I could charge much higher prices – 2x, 3x, 5x more because of specialization. You want to find an industry that you can specialize in. Some examples of industries you can specialize in are finance, health, science or technology. And even in these broad industries you can specialize even further. For example, with health you can specialize in weight loss, keto, or even dieting.
If you are a jack of all trades copywriter that can write in any industry, you are not very valuable. Versus someone who’s looking for a particular copywriter in a particular industry who is specialized in that field, you will be much more valuable. The more you write for that industry, the more insights you gain that no one else will have. You will know the industry, the regulations, and the customers inside and out. And from this knowledge you would have a good understanding of what offer would convert. That’s what your client is paying for – results.
If you can give them a shortcut to achieve those results, they will gladly pay you your fee.Your client pays you for a shortcut to produce results. Click To Tweet
Simple But Effective – The 3 Keys of Copywriting
These 3 keys may sound simple, but they are truly what allowed me to make a six figure income at a very young age. Once I understood these principles and applied them to my business, I was able to start generating 6 figures a year just from copywriting.
To recap, here are the 3 Keys To Earning A Higher Income As A Copywriter:
- Spend your time writing instead of hunting. As a copywriter, you get paid to write not to hunt.
- Write for people that can afford to pay you. If your client sees the value that you bring, they will gladly pay you your fee.
- Specialize in an industry. Being a specialist means you know the industry inside and out. And with that knowledge, you know the shortcuts that are going to get your clients results. That’s the whole reason they are paying you in the first place.
Team Dan Lok Is Hiring
In my company I am always looking for good copywriters. The catch however, is that I only hire those that have gone through my trainings. The reason for this, is because I want my copywriters to understand my brand and philosophies. They need to understand what Team Dan Lok is about – things that general copywriters in the marketplace don’t have.
