The Impact of Loneliness
Loneliness can severely impact your life, your mood, your mental health, and your productivity. It’s difficult to focus on tasks you need to get done when you’re feeling depressed or lonely. Many people also develop bad habits to self-medicate or distract themselves from their loneliness. These bad habits people use to cope with loneliness include binge-drinking, binge-eating, excess amounts of sleep or television, or codependency in toxic relationships. It’s common to develop addictions to unhealthy things like substances, junk food, gambling or alcohol in an effort to numb the pain. Because that’s what loneliness feels like for most people. It feels like pain.
This is why it’s so important to learn how to combat loneliness, the healthy way.
If you don’t learn how to combat loneliness in a healthy way, you could develop serious mental health problems such as depression, or you could develop an unhealthy addiction. In general, isolation and loneliness can put people in a very vulnerable and compromising position if they don’t know how to cope with it.
How To Combat Loneliness: The First Step is to Figure Out Why You’re Lonely
The first step to combating feelings of loneliness, is to figure out why you’re feeling lonely. Only when you recognize what’s causing your loneliness, will you be able to figure out what to do about it. So, what is making you feel lonely? Does it feel like something is missing from your life? Are you lonely because you’re longing for something that is missing, and if so, what is it? Is it something, or someone? Figure out if what you’re missing is a person or a thing, or both.
Now, ask yourself if you are simply feeling a lack of connection to anything or anyone. That feeling of disconnect can make anyone feel lonely, and perhaps you need to work on strengthening your connections with your friends or family members, or building a connection with your neighbors or your community.
In many cases, you’re feeling lonely because there’s a void that needs to be filled. That void might be due to a job you recently lost, a breakup, or a sudden lack of social interaction. Maybe you could fill that void by discovering a new interest, starting a new passion project, or learning a new skill.
It’s also possible that the reason you’re lonely is because you feel empty inside, or unfulfilled. This happens when your life lacks meaning or purpose, or when you don’t have anything to get excited about. It’s a sign you need to find meaning and find a purpose. You need to find something to get excited about.
While it may be common to feel lonely if you lack a passion or a purpose, it’s also possible to find a passion or purpose during this time.
If any of the above reasons for feeling lonely resonate with you, that’s good, because we’re going to discuss many of them in more detail. Read on for some very helpful tips that will help you get through this tough time, if you’re wondering how to combat loneliness.
Discover Your Passion
Feelings of loneliness often stem from feeling empty inside. Often, the reason why people feel an emptiness or numbness, is because they aren’t filling their days with anything that they’re truly passionate about.
Discovering your passion will help fill that emptiness, and therefore combat loneliness. The reason why this works is because spending your time doing something you’re passionate about fills you with a sense of joy and fulfillment. This fills the void inside of you, and combats loneliness.
Imagine that you have a remote job that requires you to work full time, from home. This job doesn’t satisfy you, however, and you’re not passionate about it. In fact, it bores you. You could be busy all day, but still feel lonely, because you’re not feeling fulfilled.
Dr. Sophia Reed, who has a Ph.D. in human behavior says, “A person has to find something they are passionate about, and be able to turn those passions into goals. When someone begins to take action toward a goal that they find meaningful, this is what combats the emptiness because the person feels a sense of purpose. The key is that they have to pursue something that is meaningful to them. Filling that void of emptiness is not just about being busy and distracted, but rather finding the meaning behind what you do. That is the key to fulfillment.”
Discover Your Gift
Sometimes, discovering your passion and discovering your gift are two different discoveries. Both discoveries are great if you’re trying to figure out how to combat loneliness, because discovering your passion and your gift both help fill a void inside of you.
Your passion is something you love doing, and your gift is something you’re great at doing. If you’re lucky, your passion is also your gift. But don’t get discouraged if that’s not the case for you.
Steve Harvey once said, “Your gift is the thing you do the absolute best with the least amount of effort.” Your gift is what you’re skilled at, talented at, and great at doing. Your gift could be writing, delivering a sales pitch, vlogging, creating graphics – the list goes on.
You may have to experiment with different things, learn various skills, and take time to discover your gift. Perhaps what you’re highly skilled at will surprise you. But why, if you want to know how to combat loneliness, should you know what your gift is? Because that flood of satisfaction, and that sense of accomplishment from realizing you’re truly talented at something, is a wonderful feeling which combats loneliness.
Set Goals and Formulate a Routine
When you wake up, your sole goal can’t be to get through the day. You need to set actual goals to achieve each day, and build a routine around those goals. Believe it or not, structure does help dissipate feelings of loneliness.
It’s when you stare at your computer screen all day like a zombie, or go through each day without a plan, routine or structure, that you begin to feel even more alone.
Imagine that your goals are to get fit and become a better writer. What should your daily routine look like? This is what you need to figure out, because you need a plan, and you need direction. Perhaps your morning routine will include a morning run outside, then cooking a healthy meal, and then logging onto your online copywriting course to see what the day’s assignment is, then completing a few writing exercises.
You should write out your goals, and put that list of goals somewhere visible, like in a frame on your work desk. Your daily goals and your daily routine should be structured in a way that helps ensure you’ll achieve those big goals.
Many people find comfort in routines. Since loneliness is such an uncomfortable feeling, it’s natural that developing a solid routine would ease some of that discomfort. You might feel better if you develop a morning routine, a bedtime routine, and even a home workout routine.
Something involving self-improvement should also be added to your routine, whether that’s an online course you’re taking to learn a new skill, or a business-related project you’re working on.
Join an Online Community
Joining any type of group or community is a fantastic way to combat loneliness. Because of the current stay-at-home order, your best bet right now is to join an online community.
The more connected you feel to the online group or community you join, the more it will help you combat loneliness. So, that means you should join a community of like-minded individuals. Find a group or community with similar interests, similar goals, or similar passions. If you’re a lonely entrepreneur who lives alone and makes a living writing, don’t join a single moms community full of parenting tips. Make sure you join a group you can relate to. Why? Because everyone feels less alone when they feel understood. And you’ll want to join a community who understands you.
For example, the community of copywriters who met each other in my High-Income Copywriter Certification Program, have a lot in common with each other. They have similar goals, similar skills, and similar passions. Many of them have become close friends, and chat with each other each day online, while supporting each other to achieve their goals.
Another type of online community that might help you learn how to combat loneliness is a mentorship program. If you’re yearning for something greater in life, finding that support online through a mentor can be very uplifting.
Make an Effort to Connect With Others
When you’re feeling lonely, especially if you live alone, it’s extremely easy to just feel sorry for yourself and not talk to anyone all day. When you give into the loneliness, that’s kind of like giving up. You have to be strong enough to try to find ways to combat the loneliness.
Each day, make an effort to connect with someone. Book a call with your mentor or your therapist, or call up a friend or family member.
Make sure there are pockets of your day, each day, where you connect with others. A video call with a friend is a pocket of time you’re connecting with someone else. Another thing you can do at some point in the day, is go for a walk in your local park, and wave and say hello to a stranger. If you don’t make an effort to connect with others each day, you’ll start to feel a sense of disconnect, which only increases feelings of loneliness.
Attend to Your Unhealed Wounds
You might be feeling lonely because you’re unable to comfort yourself when you’re feeling down. Sometimes, the reason why you can’t comfort yourself is because you have unhealed wounds that you haven’t dealt with.
These unhealed wounds can make you feel weak and vulnerable. But what does this have to do with loneliness? The thing you need to realize when you’re figuring out how to combat loneliness, is that combating loneliness requires strength. Unhealed wounds can make you feel weak, instead of strong.
You need to spend time healing your wounds, so that you can be strong enough to pull yourself together when you’re feeling lonely.
For example, let’s say you were recently let go from your job. Perhaps that left an unhealed wound of not feeling good enough. Or, what if you have an unhealed wound from a breakup, because you’re not over your ex yet, and you haven’t healed from the breakup yet? These unhealed wounds need to be tended to, in order for you to find the strength to climb out of the lonely hole you have sunk into.
Allowing yourself to grieve the loss, and then let go of the past, will help you heal those wounds. Focus on having hope for your future, rather than dwelling on what you lost, or what happened in the past. Remember all the things that make you an amazing person. Write down all of the qualities, attributes, skills and character traits that make you a great person. Then, affirm to yourself that there is hope for a bright future. Once you’ve taken the time to heal your wounds, you can focus your energy on something that brings you joy, which will combat loneliness.
Find Something Meaningful to Dedicate Yourself To
Starting a passion project can help you combat loneliness, because it gives you something meaningful to dedicate yourself to each day. If each day, you spend some of your alone time working on your passion project, you’ll have something meaningful to commit yourself to. This will fill up some of those uncomfortable silences or voids. Essentially, a passion project is a healthy distraction from feelings of loneliness.
You might be wondering, What exactly is a passion project that I can work on alone, at home? The list is endless of passion projects you can start, and it all depends on your specific skills and your specific passions.
If you love writing, your passion project could be to start a blog. Are you passionate about cooking? Your passion project might be to start a YouTube channel of cooking tutorials. If you love photography, you might buy a camera, start taking photographs, and start an online portfolio.
Anything meaningful that you can dedicate your time to, such as a passion project or a job that aligns with your core values and skills, provides you with a sense of purpose. It’s that sense of purpose that dissipates feelings of emptiness, and therefore dissipates feelings of loneliness. Never forget that purpose combats loneliness.Goals, a sense of direction, passion and a sense of purpose will combat feelings of loneliness. Click To Tweet
Hannah Brown, a Licensed Professional Counselor, says, “People feel an emptiness inside when they lack a sense of purpose. As humans we need to have something that we’re excited to wake up for each day. Something that adds value to our life and gives us a sense of satisfaction. For some, that is their education, their job, being a parent or starting their own business. You have to figure out what your purpose is in life, or your why for being alive. You want to figure out what kind of impact you want to have on others, and that is your purpose.”
