Chances are that, secretly, you know you are capable of so much more. Maybe you know exactly what you want to do – you already have an idea of your ideal life. But is it possible to unlock your potential and create your ideal self?

Perhaps you’re experiencing something like this – You know exactly what you need to do, and still, something is holding you back? If that’s the case, this article will give you some ideas on how to think less and act more, so as to unlock your full potential.

We will look at your potential in all areas of life – health, wealth, goals, relationships. Maybe you are already starting to unfold your talents in some of these? Or, maybe you are at the beginning of your journey and have only the strong inner voice telling you that you are capable of more.

Either way, you’re on your way to creating your ideal self. But how do you unlock all your potential to do so?

What Is Your Ideal Self?

Before we dive into the topic, let’s define what your ideal self is. Your ideal self is who you ultimately want to become. It’s the best version of you in every situation.

What your ideal self looks like is entirely up to you. It can begin anywhere, from losing weight, quitting smoking, or being more emotionally stable – to being the best friend or partner you could be.

But if you never thought about your ideal self before, you have to envision it first. Only when you know who you want to be can you actually become it.

Cary Grant said it best:

I pretended to be somebody I wanted to be until, finally, I became that person. Or he became me.

Your focus expands. So, if you have a clear vision of your ideal self and focus on it, you will ultimately become that person.

However, achieving your ideal self-state doesn’t happen overnight. In fact, it’s an ongoing process and you’ll probably never fully reach your ideal – your ideal self keeps growing as you grow. But it is this growth process that will give you fulfillment.

So, what you can do is aim towards your ideal self. In order to do so, you have to unlock your potential.

Everything you need is already inside you – you just don’t yet know how to use it. We want to show you how to unlock all your potential and truly go after your ideal.

Analyze Your Current Self

The first step to unlocking your potential and getting a sense of your ideal self is to analyze who you currently are. This takes deep introspection.

How do you act and behave currently? Do you like yourself? How much more potential do you think you have?

Be honest with yourself –  the more accurate your self-assessment is, the better you can work on unlocking your potential. This encompasses all areas of your life –  career, finances, as well as your feelings.

Your potential has many layers and your ideal self is your best self in all areas of life.  To begin moving towards this ideal, you need two things. You need a crystal clear idea of how your ideal self looks like, acts, and feels. The more vivid you see it, the better; drive comes from a vivid imagination.

The second thing you need is a clear idea of where you are right now. How far from your ideal self are you? What are the possible milestones on your journey?

Fake It Until You Become It

So, how do you actually unlock your potential? Maybe you have already heard the saying fake it until you make it. Pretending that you already are your ideal self could actually help you realize that goal.

But, fake it until you make it is actually not 100% accurate. It’s fake it until you’ve become it.

Dan Lok often tells his students to envision the ideal life and live as if it already were true – challenge reality to catch up. But why does pretending like this actually work?

As human beings, we are controlled by our thoughts. Where our thoughts go, we go.

What we think, we become. Click To Tweet

It’s likely that our subconscious mind can’t tell apart imagination and reality. So, if you keep envisioning and acting out certain things, they feel real to you.

At first, you might feel weird pretending. Slowly, however, what you envision will become your reality. To unlock your potential, start with your identity.

Unlock Your Identity

Who do you really want to be –  a strong leader? A loving partner?

Everything you want in life starts with you and your actions. Your identity shapes your habits, and your habits shape your life.

Have you ever noticed that non-smokers don’t have to worry about smoking? They are non-smokers, so why would they? However, those who recently quit often have trouble staying away from cigarettes. That’s because being a smoker is still part of their identity.

This is how powerful your identity is. People do everything necessary to keep up their self-image, even subconsciously. If you secretly regard yourself as a poor person, you will likely self-sabotage anytime you have a chance to make money.

So, to unlock your potential, unlock your identity first. Discover who you want to be and act accordingly.

Unlock Your Wealth

Money and finances are one of the most important aspects of a peaceful life. Having enough money gives you peace of mind, as financial security means you don’t have to be fearful about your basic needs.

There are many ways to unlock your potential in wealth and finance. One of the proven ways is to develop a high income skill. High income skills are not professions, but actual skills that make you money.

When you learn and hone your high income skill, you are independent of job salaries and economic crises. Your high income skill is yours; no economy can take it away. It gives you the confidence to be able to make money anytime you need to.

The Wealth Triangle

Dan Lok’s approach to unlocking your potential in finance is the wealth triangle. The wealth triangle shows you what to focus on, depending on where you are in your journey.

You start with your high income skill. Once you make $10,000 a month with your skill, you transition to a scalable business. And, finally, you add high return investments to your triangle. That’s how you achieve wealth.

Ask yourself how much money your ideal self needs. What is important to you? Do you want to live in an expensive house? Do you maybe prefer a penthouse?

Think about which car you would drive, how you would dress, and other material aspects that are important to you.

Calculate how much money you need based on that. Then you can calculate how much money you need to make each day to achieve those goals.

If your income goal is huge, you might want to begin with smaller steps. You are creating your ideal self as long as you stay on track.

As Earl Nightingale said: Success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal.

In other words, as long as you are working towards what’s important to you, you are successful.

Unlock Your Personal Power

What exactly is personal power? It’s best described as self-mastery. Your personal power comes from how you think. So, you want to learn to master your thoughts to unlock your potential.

Your personal power has probably been limited by many things you have been told growing up. To some extent, society shaped you.

Unlocking your personal power is about removing the shackles that society puts on you. For most people, this means taking more action. Click To Tweet

Many of us have great ideas, hopes, and dreams – yet we never act on them. Without our actions, we can’t unlock our potential.

Your personal power is also outside of your comfort zone. In fact, everything you want but currently don’t have is outside your comfort zone. That’s why it’s worthwhile to step out of it, even if it’s hard.

Unlock Your Productivity

One of the biggest challenges on the way to unlock your potential is your productivity.

Productivity means achieving certain results in a given timeframe. It’s not about filling your calendar with to-do’s and ticking them off one after another.

Real productivity means to master your focus and tackle the big tasks that get you ahead. It means doing what’s important first.

So many people major in minor things: they do lots of small things and wonder why they don’t get big results.

To unlock your productivity, you want to declutter your to-do list. Which of these activities is actually important to you? Which do actually get you ahead?

Everything that you don’t need or want can either be delegated or discarded completely. If cleaning your house doesn’t help you to realize your ideal self, then hire someone to do it for you.

It sounds easy, but many people struggle with mastering their focus. They struggle because they secretly don’t know what they want. So they just pursue what everybody else is pursuing.

That’s why it’s vital to have a crystal clear vision of who you want to be.

Unlock Your Social Capital

Besides financial capital, you also have social capital. Social capital is best explained as all the relationships you have with others.

Favorable relationships are actually more valuable than financial capital. You can leverage relationships many times more than pure cash. Having the right person around you at the right time could help you unlock your potential much faster.

Your social capital also extends beyond your personal relationship. It is measured by the attention you get. Attention is today’s currency: when you get attention in the marketplace, you can transform it into financial capital.

That’s exactly what Dan did with his social media presence. His huge following is immense social capital which he can leverage anytime.

When he releases a new product, he already has raving fans looking forward to the release. It’s much easier to sell to an audience that likes you and trusts you.

So, unlocking your financial capital might be intertwined with discovering your social capital. To create your ideal self, you want to build up a platform with an audience.

Unlock Your Goals

Another important aspect to unlock your potential are your goals and goal-setting process. As we mentioned before, you want to have a crystal clear idea of where you want to go in life.

Most people don’t set goals because they don’t want to change or do hard things to achieve them. If you actually set goals and regularly review them, you are already ahead.

Great goals are realistic and actionable. They are structured, so you can track your process and know exactly where you are.

The best practice for setting goals is reverse-engineering them. That means breaking your goal down into monthly, weekly, and daily tasks. What do you need to do every day to achieve the goal in the timeframe you gave yourself?

You don’t need to wait for the new year to see how far you’ve come. You can adjust your goals every day. The thing is, if you aren’t hitting your daily goals, then you aren’t achieving your yearly goals.

Reverse-engineering makes your progress extremely trackable and helps you unlock your potential to the fullest.

Unlock Your Health

An important part of your ideal self will likely be your health. How fit do you want to be? Is there a certain sport you want to pursue?

Just like with your goals, you can reverse-engineer your fitness potential and find out what you need to do each day. Your goal could be to be able to do 100 push-ups a day. Or to build the habit to work out for 20 mins a day.

Your health also includes your diet. What do you want to eat? How is your ideal self taking care of your body? Unlock your full potential by actively caring about your health.

Unlock Your Significance

When you start unlocking your fullest potential, you will likely want more. Chances are, you will ideally want to make an impact on the world. Therefore, you want to work on your significance.

Significance is achieved when your goals are part of something bigger than yourself, and when you impact others on a large scale.

Most people start out with safety and security. Later on, they probably reach success, and only after that do they reach significance. Most people need to help themselves first before they can help others.

Your ideal self has already achieved what you wanted, so you can focus on giving back. Significance is the stage where you feel most fulfilled and happy. You have found meaning and your life is in flow, as you don’t have to worry about basic necessities.

Questions For Self-Reflection

If you are just starting to unlock your full potential and create your ideal self, it’s best to take time for active thinking. Here are some powerful questions to ask yourself, and find out where you really want to be. They’ll also give you clarity on the potential you haven’t unlocked yet.

What would you do if money were no factor?

Many people see themself as forced to work in a job or in a profession because of money. Asking yourself what you’d do if you didn’t have to care about money will give you indicators of what you really enjoy.

Now, you still have to make sure you have enough money. It’s not enough to “follow your passion” and live on dreams. But knowing what you actually want to do will help you develop a plan to achieve your goals.

When do you feel happiest?

Dan was a millionaire at age 27. For years he did nothing but work to achieve his goal. Having achieved it, he did what everybody would  – he sat on the beach and drank cocktails. Interestingly enough, he wasn’t happy.

Only then did he discover that he is happiest when he is teaching. As a multi-millionaire, he wouldn’t have to teach his students; he could easily do other things to make more money. But he’s doing it because he enjoys it. It’s part of reaching significance for him.

Know what you enjoy; what you would do if you had already achieved all your goals. This is likely where your significance is located.

What would you attempt if you were guaranteed to succeed?

Most people are afraid of the unknown. Fear of failure is also a part of the fear of the unknown. What you really want to achieve in life, however, is likely beyond your comfort zone – it’s beyond the unknown.

Asking yourself what you would do if you were guaranteed to succeed allows you to remove the fear of the unknown. It gives you a glimpse into the life of your ideal self.

What are your personal core values?

Your core values are also an indicator of your ideal self. Are you able to live fully aligned with your core values? Or do you need to unlock your potential first?

Knowing your core values makes it easier to act as your ideal self.
