The coronavirus is currently sweeping the globe. Infection rates are rising steadily, every single day, making human contact extremely risky. As a result, many companies are opting to allow their employees to work remotely instead.

The people whose companies don’t offer the employees the choice to work remotely suffer the most. The coronavirus makes gatherings in a large group of people dangerous. More and more people feel their health is at risk, as they put themselves in situations where there are crowds, such as on buses and skytrains. As news of the coronavirus continues to spread and the situation worsens, these people will eventually be forced to make a decision: Their jobs or their lives.

As a result, the biggest deciding factor between companies that will remain in business and those that go bankrupt, are the measures they have in place to combat the coronavirus. Here’s how you can work remotely during this global pandemic, and why you should.

Companies That Allow Employees To Work Remotely vs. Those That Don’t

Companies that allow their employees to work remotely see many benefits than those that don’t. Studies show that employees who work remotely are more productive, face less stress, and reduce company expenses. Besides giving their employees the freedom to set their own hours, these companies are also seeing an increase in work ethic and employee results. They are in the best position to ride out the coronavirus, because their employees have limited contact with other people. They don’t have to ride the bus with strangers who may be infected, and risk becoming a carrier themselves.

In contrast, companies that don’t allow their employees to work remotely run the biggest risk. Forcing their employees to work in a crowded office for 8 hours a day increases the risk of infections. If even one employee has the coronavirus and doesn’t show any symptoms, the chances of that employee infecting the entire office is extremely high. It’s a time bomb waiting to happen.

Many companies are also forcing their employees to stay at home, without work. Some businesses such as restaurants might not have another choice. As a result, their employees do not earn any wages, because they cannot work. They’re stuck with a difficult choice between going to work and risk becoming infected, or staying at home and running out of money. In most places in the United States, they have no choice at all – they simply have to stay at home because all the restaurants are closed.

So CEOs of companies who do not support their employees working remotely have a tough decision to make. Do they allow their employees to work remotely, or keep them in the office? For many CEOs who are only now implementing measures to allow employees to work remotely, it may already be too late. Implementing the remote work systems and processes is extremely challenging in a state of emergency if you didn’t have them set up already.

Technology Plays A Big Role In How Our Society Operates Today

But times are changing, and so is the economy. CEOs and business owners that follow traditional methods of hiring employees full time, training them, and having them fulfill just one role are falling behind their competition. These business owners lack the biggest factor necessary to succeed in business: The ability to adapt and change.

As the coronavirus becomes more of a threat across the globe, more and more companies are embracing online, AI and remote services. However, companies that have been slow to put these infrastructures in place are starting to realize how badly this rapid shift is affecting them. For example, before online shopping became popular, big-name brands like Target and Zellers dominated the industry. But once people realized the convenience of shopping on an online platform like Amazon, many of these brands went bankrupt.

These companies went out of business because the people in charge of them lacked foresight. They stuck to their old traditional ways of doing business and refused to see how technology could benefit them. They were not open to change and weren’t willing to adapt to the new ways of doing things. If they did that, many might still be in business today.

If your boss does not allow you to work remotely, chances are they lack the ability to adapt to change. They don’t understand how the technology works, and aren’t willing to learn how it can benefit their business. As a result, they most likely never will. And during a time of crisis such as now, it’s one of the worst decisions they can make.

The Transition From Full Time Workers To A Gig Economy

So why does this matter? Because this emergency will force companies to look for a different type of employees. They will no longer look for full-time employees. All successful companies today look for people that can solve problems. People who can get results. After all, that’s why they hire people in the first place – because they have a certain goal they want to achieve.

You see, the present economy is a gig economy. A gig economy is an economy where people are sought out for their skills, not for an hourly wage. As talent can be found anywhere in the world, this means that companies that have the infrastructure in place to support working remotely are going to have an edge. Instead of having their talent pool limited to whoever’s in their city, they can source talent from people all over the world.

Just look at big companies like Google, Microsoft and Apple. They have offices all over the world.

They have employees from many different countries, that come from many different backgrounds. And they have the infrastructure in place to allow their employees to work remotely as well. They’re the largest and most successful companies in the world, because of their ability to adapt to change and embrace it.

Being Able To Adapt And Change Is A Skill Very Few People Have

Being able to adapt to change is a skill. And unfortunately, many people today do not possess it. Technology continues to evolve year after year, changing the way humans operate in their daily lives. Those that aren’t able to keep up with the times will fall behind and soon find themselves obsolete in the marketplace.

This is most evident in low requirement jobs that have a low barrier to entry. If your job is something that anyone can do, it’s at high risk. For example, someone who bags groceries at a grocery store is a job that has a low skill requirement. There is no skill that is required to do that job. Compared to a job like software programming or rocket scientist, these are jobs that anyone with any level of education can do.

It doesn’t mean that if you want to work remotely, you need to learn about quantum physics and rocket propulsion recipes. If you want to work remotely – develop your skills.

Skills are something that no one can take away from you. They are something that you and only you possess. Click To Tweet

IT skills are a good example. If you want to work remotely, you need to have a good understanding of computers and technology. Unfortunately, not many people possess IT skills. For them, the internet is a whole other world they have no understanding of. As a result, because they lack the skills necessary to work remotely, they are missing out on countless opportunities.

What Types of Skills Allow You To Work Remotely?

If you want to work remotely, you need skills that don’t require you to physically be somewhere in order for you to use them. For example, you could be on vacation in Hawaii and still be able to get your work done. As long as you have a computer and you’re able to get things done, that is all that matters.

Freelancers understand this concept well. And with the coronavirus currently running rampant throughout many different countries, they are in the best position to take advantage of the gig economy. Compared to traditional 9-5 employees, freelancers are not bound to any single company or boss. They can work for whoever they want and can do so from anywhere in the world. They aren’t affected by global pandemics like the coronavirus, because they don’t have to travel. All they need is an internet connection and they are set.

Here’s an example of a list of skills that allow you to work remotely:

  • Writing
  • Management
  • Programming
  • Coaching
  • Consulting
  • Artist
  • Stock Market Analysis

All these skills can be done on your computer, from the comfort of your home. Because of this, those who possess these kinds of skills can work remotely whenever they feel like it.

The Biggest Problem With Skills That Allow You To Work Remotely

However, just because you have the option to work remotely doesn’t mean you are going to be paid well. As you may know, many freelancers struggle to earn enough to pay their expenses every month. They’re forced to take on small jobs or work with difficult people that take up a lot of their time.

The reason is that, just like how anyone can fill the position for a low skill job, anyone can become a freelancer as well. What differentiates one freelancer from the other? For example, a freelancer who can photoshop an image for you is someone who is typically not going to be paid well. The freelancer is paid for the amount of value they are delivering to you. And tuning up an image is not that valuable, it’s a saturated skill. You can hop on any job board like Fiverr or Upwork and get someone to do it for only $5.

However, someone with a skill like closing is going to be paid a lot more. Someone who can close is able to secure deals, generate revenue and build relationships with customers. This kind of skill is invaluable to big businesses because they deliver a lot more value. They are generating revenue for the business, which is why they get paid so well.

This is why I recommend to all my students to develop what I call are High Income Skills. High Income Skills are skills that allow you to work remotely, and earn a handsome wage while doing so.

What Are High Income Skills?

A High Income Skill is a skill that satisfies the following:

  • Generates $10,000 or more a month
  • Pays you based on the value you bring to the marketplace, not the opinion of your boss or manager
  • Increases in income as you get better at it

Closing is a High Income Skill because you can earn over $10,000 a month simply from commissions. You are paid based on the deals that you successfully close. And as you get better at closing and your closing ratio increases, your income increases as well.

The best part about learning a High Income Skillis the freedom it grants you. I know many employees that are wondering what’s going to happen to them next. They can’t go to work and they aren’t earning any money. They’re being forced to stay at home in a situation that isn’t financially sustainable. They’re worried about what’s going to happen to them, their families, and their children.

But if they possessed a High Income Skill, they wouldn’t have to worry about their situation. They wouldn’t even have to worry about the coronavirus because it has no impact on their lives. A High Income Skill allows you to work from anywhere in the world. You are in demand because of the value you bring, and you can help anyone around the world. Lockdowns in countries don’t affect you, because you can reach anyone. And during times where the economy is unstable, businesses need people with High Income Skills more than ever. They want to stay in business, and they’re looking for people who have the skills to help them do that.

Are High Income Skills The Solution To The Coronavirus?

If you don’t have the option to work remotely, should you learn a High Income Skill? Will High Income Skills solve the problems humanity currently faces regarding the coronavirus?

Of course not. A High Income Skill is a skill that you learn to provide value to the marketplace. It’s not going to magically cure the coronavirus. I’m not a medical doctor and have no formal training in providing medical advice. If you’re looking for a solution to the coronavirus, a vaccine is perhaps your best bet. However, if you want to achieve financial confidence, or are looking for a way to work remotely during this global pandemic, a High Income Skill is one of the best investments you can make in yourself.

Learning a High Income Skill is not easy. It is simple, but it is not easy. Like anything else that you want to learn, you need to put in the work. You need to invest time and energy to learn that skill, and eventually master it. I know many people who give up too early because they are impatient. They do not see results immediately and end up giving up. A High Income Skill will allow you to work remotely, because of the value that you bring to the marketplace. It will provide you with a way to earn a steady income working on your own terms. You won’t have to go to an office, transit amongst hundreds of other people, or listen to the orders of a boss. You are your own boss.
