Do you believe in the pursuit of greatness? Have you always dreamed of living life on your own terms? Do you feel that you are meant for something greater? And if so, do you strive every day towards fulfilling your true potential? If yes, then I commend you. You are in the pursuit of greatness.
A long time ago, the ancient Chinese philosopher, Confucius said:
His words still hold true today. However, not everyone gets to live by them.
Maybe you feel stuck in a job you hate, but it pays well. Or you have a successful business that makes you decent money – but you feel unfulfilled.
The path to that fulfillment is built on your choices. And everyone is faced with important choices at some point in their journey: Either take a risk and pursue greatness, or be pleased with your safe mediocrity.
Guess what most people choose?
The Comfort of Mediocrity
All your life you have been taught to settle. Told to be content with what you have been given. The education system and our society have trained us, all our lives, to be average.
As a result, most people follow the norms. Even if they don’t want to.
Tell me if you think I’m wrong.
When you have achieved something “good” in life, you get comfortable with it. You find a million reasons not to go for the “great”. Even if you dream about it – all the time. Why? Because a normal life offers the path of least resistance and conforms to the idea of comfort. It allows you to live in the comfort of reaching others’ expectations from you. And that is the lowest standard you can imagine for yourself.
Now, I am not saying a normal life is a bad way to live. But, it hampers you from achieving your true potential.
And if you dare try to break free from the shackles of mediocrity, what happens? Everyone around you does their best to bring you down – including your friends and family.
But, what about the people who make a difference in this world? They don’t go down no matter what. Because they have a strong desire. A desire to be great. To go above and beyond. And they do whatever it takes, in the pursuit of greatness.
What is The Pursuit of Greatness?
The pursuit of greatness means being able to live the life of your choosing. To have the freedom to choose the things that are important to you, personally.
It is a positive mental state. A healthy attitude that motivates you to look beyond the ordinary.
Your present state is the result of your past decisions and habits compounded over time. The decisions and habits you form now are going to result in your future.
You see, the possibilities in your life are infinite. It’s up to you to capitalize on them. To do that, you need to become the best version of yourself.
Anything valuable in life comes with a grind. So does this journey.
Great accomplishments require discipline and consistency. You will have to be patient and laser-focused.
You are going to be continuously challenged on this journey. And it’s okay to feel discouraged, tired or impatient.
But, when you are in the pursuit of greatness, you do not stop.
And everything begins with the mind. Your mindset is the master key to unlocking your true potential.
The Power of Your Mind
Every success story is laid on the foundation of a strong mindset.
And the story begins with self-discovery. Knowing what you want.
Knowing that you can achieve success and significance regardless of your age, background or skills.
You need to discover the fire inside you.
Remember, the fire relies on self-belief and self-confidence to help realize its true potential.
So you need to believe in the fire. And have the confidence to use that fire to burn all obstacles that come your way.
It’s difficult to maintain a positive attitude when the world around you tries to bring you down.
Hence, first, you have to develop the right mindset. Understand yourself. Believe in yourself. And then build the confidence to handle whatever comes your way.
You will have to find comfort in being uncomfortable. Being uncomfortable is a sign of growth. The greater the challenge, the greater the growth
Remember: You are only limited by yourself. You can achieve anything if you set your mind to it.
Here’s how you can trick your brain into doing hard things.
If challenging yourself is not part of your daily routine then you won’t last in the pursuit of greatness.
But, it’s not impossible.
Take it One Step at a Time
You have to look at every challenge as an opportunity. Turn that opportunity into a win. However small they may be. You have to focus on the little victories.
Little wins in your day, though not very significant add up to big wins. In this journey, you need to realize the importance of the smaller wins. So, you stay focused in the right direction.
Ignoring the small wins or feeling impatient will only drive you towards more negative emotions. Hitting those goals every day will help you sleep in peace knowing that your actions have propelled you forward.
You will have to develop the strength to say “No” to the things you want now. So you can say “Yes” to better things in the future.
It takes consistent effort to remain steady on the pursuit of greatness. But the reward is worth it.
And there is no one better to keep you focused than a mentor.
Find a Mentor to Guide You
The pursuit of greatness is a fire within us. It needs to be fed.
There are a lot of positive influences and people out there who have achieved a lot. They can serve as an inspiration to you. More often than not they can help raise you from mediocrity.
If you can find that one person to guide you, your life will change.
Do you know that 71% of Fortune 500 companies have mentoring programs?
According to the Harvard Business Review’s study on CEOs who were mentored:
- 84% said mentors had helped them avoid costly mistakes
- 84% become proficient in their roles faster
- 69% were making better decisions
Do you now understand the power of having a mentor?
Here are three amazing stories about how a mentor can make a difference”
A mentor is someone who has been there. Someone who has made it. Someone who has experience. A mentor can cut years of struggle from your life. Fastrack you on the path of success.
Yet, most people never have a mentor. Why?
Because they think they don’t need one. Or they never looked for one.
Great teachers lead you to find your own answers. They will always enable you to do things that you would never do otherwise.
Here’s how you can find a mentor to change the course of your life.
How My Mentor Changed My Life
Years ago, I was in the pursuit of greatness too. I was working hard but was unable to succeed.
I was just looking for someone to tell me what I was doing wrong. Someone to just show me the way…
That is when I found my first mentor, Alan Jacques.
It is then, that I understood:
Today, I am a serial entrepreneur with multi-million dollar businesses globally. I am the world’s highest-paid consultant charging $10k/hour for my time.
How did I get to where I am?
Maybe you are thinking that I got lucky. Or that I was privileged.
Now, what if I told you that I tried and failed at 13 businesses which got me in $150k in debt? Or that I couldn’t speak a word of English when I migrated to Canada from China? It’s true.
I was the invisible guy in class, who could not make eye contact with anyone. Was bullied every day at school. I failed high-school English twice.
Does that sound privileged to you? Or lucky?
I was far from where I am today. Do you see the difference a mentor can make?
If you can’t relate to my story. That’s okay. There are a ton of great personalities out there who have shared their stories of rags to riches.
People who have started from extreme disadvantages and turned their lives around.
Find Your Inspiration
Everyone has a different start. And a different set of challenges they have to face in their lives. Their stories serve as reminders that the pursuit of greatness requires laser-like intensity and focus. Maybe you have not got it as bad as them. That’s great.
Maybe your life is quite comfortable. Good for you.
Not everyone needs to start the pursuit of greatness from scratch.
You should be grateful for where you are but don’t let it force you into inaction. Instead, use it as a positive influence. As a foundation to build upward while enjoying the journey forward.
Do you realize you already have an advantage? You are closer than you think. Closer to greatness than I ever was, when I started.
Maybe you can find inspiration in my good friend, Lewis Howes.
He had a rough childhood owing to a learning disability and abuse.
A pro athlete whose career-ending injury changed his life. After he was badly injured he had to live on his sister’s couch for almost two years.
He had no hope left and no plan for the future. Today he has become an inspiration to millions.
