Want To Become A Copywriter? (Read This)

Recently I asked for your input about different topics to write about for future weekly newsletters.

And one of the most popular things people wanted to know was how to get started as a copywriter and find your first client.

So, in this week’s newsletter we’ll cover just that.

Ready?

What Does a Copywriter Do?

Before I learned copywriting from my mentor Alan, he explained to me what it was.

Like most people, I mistook it for Copyright.

I thought it had something to do with patents, but I was wrong.

So, if copywriting is new to you, in simple terms it’s what I like to call “closing in print”.

A copywriter’s goal is to get the reader to take a specific action.

That action could be anything such as clicking a link or signing up to a masterclass, or buying a product or service.

Why Copywriting Is So Powerful

When you can read your prospect’s mind you can write to them about their problems and position your solution in such a way that they absolutely must have it… you’ve got a very unique skill indeed.

If you look around online, everything that’s not a picture or a video is copy.

It’s everywhere in the online and offline world, and yet no one seems to realize.

They don’t realize they’re being sold everywhere they look.

From signs and billboards, to emails, to ads, to books, to movie scripts.

Everything is selling an idea.

Some of the highest paid people in the world are professional copywriters, so not only is copy creative and fun, you can also make great money doing it.

How To Find Good Copy To Study

If you’re signed up to different newsletters or email lists like mine, you’ll get marketing emails a few times per week, sometimes even daily.

Now of course, not all emails are good to study, but if you’ve been on my email list for a few years, you can study my old emails.

Make a list of the niches you’d like to write for and find email lists to join and begin studying the emails you receive.

You’ll start to notice patterns, and you’ll pick out things that make a good sales email.

Another site I highly recommend is swiped.co which is a database of all different types of high converting sales copy.

PRO TIP: When I started out, Alan told me to hand copy winning promotions.

It’s up to you if you do it, but I’d strongly suggest it if you want to get good fast.

Why Email Is A Great Place To Start

In my first year as a copywriter I wrote sales pages for my clients.

But to be frank, sales pages are difficult to learn straight out the gate.

They require a huge amount of research and time and are often 40 or more pages long.

Most beginners would feel overwhelmed, this is why I suggest you start with email.

As you know, emails are far shorter, this means there is less chance of error and the learning curve is not as steep.

Your goal with the email is to get them to click the link, and if you’d like 5 Copywriting tips for beginners, I shot you a short video here >>

How To Write Your First Email

As I mentioned, copywriting is everywhere online, which means you can find a product to write for very easily.

So once you’ve found a product to sell, craft an email that prompts the reader to click the link and takes them to the blog, store, or the sales page.

You’ll need to find a unique angle for your email that makes the email interesting to read.

I’ve got a great video to help you do this, you can watch here >>

Because when you’re selling, it’s important you offer value and don’t appear sleazy.

There’s a fine line between pitching your product and selling too hard or being too salesy.

Now although emails are more simple and easier to write than sales pages, email can become a very deep topic which is why you’ll want to study on your own.

How To Charge For Your Services

Once you’re ready to write for clients, there are many ways to price and charge for your copy services.

When I first got started, I remember Alan asked me to raise my prices often.

Every few months I’d go to him and he’d ask me to double my price.

I was so nervous I had to practice saying my new price in front of the mirror until I could say it comfortably.

There are specific ways to price your services if you want the power to increase your income.

And I speak about the right and wrong ways to charge here >>

How To Find Your First Client

I think in the early stages you just want to get some paid work so anything is good for your first gig.

I recommend my students to even start out on sites like Fiverr or Upwork.

But eventually you’ll want something more stable and reliable.

The clients you work with are crucial to your income stability and avoiding what I call the “income rollercoaster”.

I teach my students to go to clients with high ticket products or services who need regular copy each month.

One way of finding clients like these is on ‘Facebook Ad Library’ or ‘YouTube’.

When you see an ad for a niche you like, you’ll need to do some detective work and enter their funnel to check out their offer.

There are many ways of closing clients but one effective way is by writing them a sample email they can run to their list.

If they use it and it performs well they may want to do more work with you.

How To Cold Email Your Prospects

Cold emails should be short and to the point.

Business owners are busy and no one wants to read an essay.

Rather than me explain how to write a good cold email, which would take a long time, I found this great video for you to watch >>

I hope you’ve found this newsletter useful.

Copywriting is a learned skill that takes time but if you stick with it you could get good faster than you think.

If want my help to develop your copywriting skill, I recommend signing up for my High Income Copywriter Certification Program >>

The program is 7 weeks long and teaches you what I believe are the best areas of copywriting to focus on if you want to make a good living as a copywriter online.

Discover 5 Proven Strategies to Find High-Ticket Clients and Grow Your Business

Finding high ticket clients is one of the biggest problems coaches, consultants, and high ticket experts share.

I remember when I first started my one-man copywriting agency.

I scoured The Yellow Pages (yes, it was a long time ago) looking for clients.

I’d cold call business, and tell them their ads sucked, and asked if they wanted me to write them a new one.

And guess what?

It was time for a terrible client-getting strategy…

Not to mention, time-consuming, frustrating, and demoralizing.

So in this week’s newsletter, I’m going to share with you 5 ways you can find high ticket clients.

Excited?

Good, let’s go!

FAIR WARNING: As you’re probably aware, 1 is the scariest number in business.

You never want to rely on ONE method only.

As a business owner, you must have multiple clients getting strategies working for you, for a continual flow of clients.

Networking

If you live in a well populated city, attending business events, or conferences and events in your niche.

You’ll meet a lot of like-minded people, you’ll get to learn from people further ahead than you, and you may even get to showcase your expertise.

But, there a few potential problems with this method:

You may face tough competition from other coaches and consultants in attendance.

Attending events often can become costly and time-consuming, when you could invest that time building your online presence (more on this later).

You don’t have complete control over the environment, you have limited access to every attendee, and it can be difficult building relationships over a short period of time.

Partnerships

This is a very effective way of expanding your client base.

You do this by collaborating with other businesses who serve the same people as you, but don’t solve the same problems.

This way you can both refer clients to each other and tap into each other’s networks.

Referrals

This is another great way of finding clients that boosts your bottomline.

Most business owners rely solely on referrals, and while that can work for some.

For me, referrals are like the icing on the cake.

But they are so important, I created an entire playlist you can check out here >>

Getting referrals is as simple as asking, but like everything, there’s a right way and wrong way.

So if you want my best tips, you’re welcome to sift through the playlist and for my best referral strategies…

Or you can get them all in my training Referral Secrets if you want something well-structured and concise >>

Speaking at Events

These could be events you guest speak at, or events you run.

I love running live events, and if you have the speaking skills, events can be a very simple way to enroll new clients >>

Even if your speaking skills aren’t quite there yet, if you don’t speak at events or run your own, you’ll never improve.

As you know, when you speak at events, you’re seen as an authority, which is great for positioning and conversions.

Selling from the stage is outside the scope of this newsletter, but I plan to write a newsletter about that in the near future.

There is an art to running events, and in this video, I cover how I run my events plus one HUGE mistake most people make which kills their success >>

Digital Marketing

Digital marketing is a broad term that encompasses paid ads on multiple platforms, free resources such as Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook, etc, and email marketing.

Naturally, Digital Marketing is one of my favorite ways to attract and enroll high ticket clients.

You see me everywhere online, but what may surprise you, is you can still achieve great results without a huge social media presence.

Two reasons I love digital marketing is because you can specifically target your ideal client, which you can’t do in the offline world…

And due to the sheer number of people online, you can scale your marketing and business rapidly if things are done right.

If you want to know how to get attention from social media and avoid costly mistakes, then watch this video >>

Final words

Of course, all these client getting methods rely on the fact that you have strong systems in place to help you scale and sustain your growth.

If you feel the systems in your business need improvement or are non-existent, then I recommend getting to work to create the systems you need.

Doing this yourself will likely take your countless hours of research and implementation…

So, if you’d like my help and guidance, then I invite you to attend the first S.M.A.R.T. Challenge™ of 2023.

Over 3 impactful days, you’ll get my best tips and strategies to SCALE, SYSTEMIZE, and SUSTAIN your business.

Want Free High Ticket Leads?

It’s never been more critical to build an organic audience…

After all, if you have killer content your audience enjoys and finds valuable…

You’ve essentially got a horde of free leads who know, like, and trust you, and have great potential to become future customers and clients.

But as you may know, building an organic following takes time, energy, and consistency.

So, in this week’s newsletter, you’ll discover the content creation secrets of some of the internet’s top influencers…

And I’ll also share my best tips for automating your content to save time.

Before we get started, I’m going to assume you know exactly who your client avatar is, because if not, you’ll find it very difficult to create high-value content for your niche.

If you’re unclear about your client avatar, then watch this video before you continue reading this newsletter >>

How To Produce Content On a Consistent Basis

No matter what you pursue in life or business, consistency is KEY.

I always say, “consistency beats intensity”, and it’s very true.

Let’s take working out as an example.

You’re far better off building a habit of working out for 30 minutes, 4 times per week, than doing one 2-hour session only when you feel motivated.

It’s the same with content.

You want to build a habit around creating content because you’re not always going to feel motivated or inspired.

So how do you ensure you’ll set aside enough time each week to create content?

You can find out what I do here >>

Another thing that I do, that Gary Vee also believes in, is integration.

I say, “Integrate content creation into your life”.

Gary says “Document, don’t create.”

It’s the same thing.

If you can find a way to make content creation part of your day, you’ll find it far less challenging to stay consistent.

My whole Boss in the Bentley series was shot on the way to meetings etc.

Why Self-awareness Is KEY When Creating Content

As you know, there are multiple platforms and formats you could create content for.

Personally, I have content in all areas, from video to audio, to pictures, and blogs/articles.

I’m at a stage where my team creates a lot of that for me, but I didn’t get there overnight.

For you, if you’re just starting out or not too far along on your journey, you’ll need to figure out what you enjoy most and where your strengths lie, and then pick a suitable platform.

Speaking of Gary Vee… here’s a snippet from an interview he did in Dubai where he talks about all things content creation…

From, self-awareness and staying consistent, to income streams, and why having a bad week or month isn’t the end of the world >>

I strongly suggest you watch this video, as it also reveals one of the most powerful content creation strategies most creators overlook.

Why You Must Stay In Your Lane When Creating Content

I have a lot of different types of videos on my YouTube channel, but they’re all connected in some way to business, life, and success…

But you’ll never catch me making a video about something I know nothing about, and that’s why authenticity is so important.

You’ve got to make content that’s authentic to you, your experiences, beliefs, and expertise.

Gary Vee mentioned this in the video I linked above, and other top content creators like Alex Hormozi will say the same thing.

If you speak on things you don’t know about, it will be obvious to your audience, and you’ll lose credibility.

Now, that doesn’t mean you can’t research a topic to relay it to your audience and add your spin to it, but you must do the work before you create content on a particular topic.

If you want to know Alex Hormozi’s best content creation tips, then click here for a private conversation he and his wife had with a fan and fellow content creator

>>

How To Keep Your Content Ideas Fresh

This will sound obvious, but if you want to succeed at the game of content creation, you must always have new ideas and a fresh spin on things.

Don’t get me wrong, this can be very challenging, but one of the things I like to do is look at content in other niches and see how I can apply it to my niche.

There’s little point in watching content in your niche for new ideas.

You’ve got to think outside the box, or better yet, think like there is no box.

And watching studying other niches is a great way of doing this.

But, I have something special for you if you ever get stuck for ideas.

In this video, successful entrepreneur YouTube personality, Marie Forleo breaks down her 3 favorite ways of never running out of content… >>

And these tips can and should also be applied to other areas of your business.

So, don’t waste another second, and watch the video above, you’ll be glad you did.

How To Schedule Your Content

If you’re not at the stage where you have a team to schedule content for you, my best advice is to block out a small amount of time and automate your content.

You could do it once per week, twice per month, or even once a month, whatever works best with your content creation schedule.

I’ve tried a bunch of different softwares for different platforms, so feel free to Google search an automation software for the platform of your choice.

Some platforms, like YouTube have inbuilt scheduling options.

You may also like to research when is the best time day and time to post content in your region of the world.

To Recap…

If you want to build a loyal fanbase, some of which will take action on your offers, you must:

Know your audience… Have fresh ideas… Be authentic… Produce high quality content… and Be consistent.

If you can do all those, and plan to play the LONG game (I’m talking at least 2-5 years here) then you’re in a great position to build the following you desire.

To your success,

Dan Lok

P.S. – Whether you have a solid social media following yet or not, one thing vital to the success of your business is having an irresistible high ticket offer.

How To Fill Your Team With “A Players”

Everyone wants a team they can hold accountable…

A team that works well together, so they can minimize having tough conversations with members who don’t perform.

I’m talking about “A Players”.

So, in this week’s edition of High Ticket Weekly, you’ll discover how to rate your team members…

How to hold them accountable…

And how to handle team members who underperform, and have tough conversations if needed.

How To Define An “A Player”

It goes without saying that an “A Player” is someone who consistently performs at high levels and exceeds expectations.

But what specific characteristics do they possess?

Because before you fill your team with “A players”, you must know what to look for.

Now, you may already have a definition in your head, but I believe “A players” should possess these six characteristics.

  • High productivity levels: They should be able to handle high workloads and complete work to a high standard over short periods of time.
  • Strong skills and knowledge: They should have strong technical skills and be able to apply these skills to their work.
  • Proactive and independent: They must show great initiative, pick things up fast, and be able to work and solve problems with minimal or no supervision.
  • Positive attitude: They must love what they do and enjoy working within the company. They must also contribute new ideas and work well with other team members.
  • Strong communication skills: “A players” have strong written and verbal communication skills they use to communicate their ideas to you and the entire team.
  • High EQ: I believe Emotional Quotient eats Intelligence Quotient (IQ) for breakfast. Sure, “A players” are often intelligent too, but they don’t have to be a genius to be an “A player” if they have a high EQ.

IMPORTANT: Each role has different expectations, and the definition of an “A player” will vary between departments.

Now you have a clear idea about what an “A player” looks like, you can create a rating system and begin to rate your team members to see how they measure up.

It’s possible you could train a “B player” to become an “A player” over time.

When rating team members it’s important you use clear and specific criteria for each role and stay consistent and objective with each rating.

If you’d like to know my simple method for measuring my teams performance, click here >>

How To Keep Your Team Motivated and Accountable

People ask me all the time, “Dan, how do I motivate my team?”

The truth is, you don’t.

You find people who are already motivated.

That cuts out a lot of the training and hard work on your behalf.

So, knowing that your team is already motivated, let’s speak about ways of holding your team accountable, whether they’re remote or not.

How To Keep Your Team Accountable

I believe one of the most vital keys to accountability is setting clear expectations.

These should be set each time a new employee joins the team.

There should be clear expectations around each project, such as budget, first draft due, and final deadline.

Communication is always important, but in a remote setting, it’s even more important.

You may like to set up a weekly meeting and a daily check-in if needed.

Employee engagement is also a key factor and there are things you can do to boost engagement such as frequent communication, and team-building activities.

These are just 3 of 8 ways to keep a remote team accountable.

If you’d like to know another five ways of holding your team accountable, then click here to read this short article >>

How To Handle Team Members Who Don’t Perform

Every business has team members who don’t perform at some point in time.

They may submit subpar work… they may constantly miss deadlines… there could be an energy mismatch between them and the company as a whole.

Whatever the reason, it’s expensive and time-consuming to look for new employees all the time…

So, here are a few ways of helping them improve their performance.

It all starts with communicating your concerns, so you and the employee can identify the root cause of the problem.

Ask them the right questions, and once you’ve uncovered the problem(s) you can create new targets and offer support and resources for them to improve.

You must also set clear expectations so the two of you know if the new targets are being met.

Finally, you must follow up with them and monitor their progress.

I shot you a roleplay of me coaching one of my event attendees on how to have a conversation like this >>

How To Have Tough Conversations With Employees

Should any team member continue to underperform even with your support, eventually you’ll need to have an even tougher conversation to let them go.

Here are 3 things to think about before and while you have the conversation.

  • Make sure you prepare in advance and plan what you’re going to say. Be clear and direct with a clear outcome for the conversation, and have an answer for any challenges or objections that may arise.
  • Choose a private location where people can’t interrupt you or overhear what’s being said.
  • Practice aggressive listening: Pay close attention to what your employee is saying so you can construct thoughtful and respectful answers.

So there you have it…

My best tips for identifying and keeping “A players” in your organization…

Keeping your remote team accountable…

And dealing with underperforming employees.

I hope this newsletter has been of great help to you and your business.

Until next time… go high ticket,

Could AI Steal Your Job? (Read This)

There’s an AI art craze sweeping Instagram as I write this…

Some artists say AI will destroy their livelihood.

Some say AI will help the industry and won’t be as bad as expected.

Personally, I’m not in that industry, so I haven’t looked into it much.

Now, I don’t want to alarm you…

But here’s an important question you should ask yourself….

“Is my job at risk?”

Many jobs have already been replaced by computers or AI…

Just look at self-checkouts at supermarkets and self-ordering at McDonalds.

As a business owner, I’m always looking for ways to do the same job, faster and cheaper, and other companies are no different.

So where does that leave you?

I recorded you a quick 9 min video, where I break down the types of jobs that will disappear in the next 20 years, both low and high income jobs >>

Some of them have already begun disappearing as I mentioned above, but more are on the horizon.

After watching that video, I realize the thought of AI taking over is scary…

But in just a moment, you’ll discover why…

Why AI Doesn’t Spell The End Of all Jobs

It makes sense that computers can do complex tasks in high volumes much faster and more accurately than a human can.

We’ll never be able to compete at that level, but humans have abilities computers don’t.

And if you want to know what kinds of tasks you’ll do far better than any computer, then click here >>

This is a breath of fresh air for anyone thinking they’ll be unemployed in the future.

As you saw in the video above, humans are far better at solving certain problems than computers are.

Furthermore, not every company will be able to afford the type of AI that can short cut their time invested.

How to Not Only Survive But Thrive During Automation

If you remember the first video you watched above, I mentioned a high income skill is a great alternative to your current job if it’s in danger of being automated.

The skill I was referring to in that video was High Ticket Closing or high ticket sales.

The reason why this can’t be replaced by AI is that closing is emotional.

Sure, in theory, you could program AI to say the right thing every time a prospect answers a question.

But the prospect knows AI doesn’t care about them.

The AI’s sole objective is to get the sale.

That’s why closers will ALWAYS have a job.

Another high income skill I teach is copywriting.

Now, this is different to closing as AI can write sales copy and articles, etc.

But AI does have limitations.

What if your client wants a style of copy or writing that isn’t programmed into the AI?

AI can’t think of all the things prospects want to see in an irresistible offer.

But a human can.

If you want to to know why I think AI won’t replace copywriters, click here to watch this quick 4 min video >>

Recently, I put some AI software to the test and gave my expert opinion on the piece of copy it produced, so if you want to see how well the AI performed, then watch this quick video >>

So there you have it.

Automation is nothing to be afraid of if you’re willing to evolve and adapt to change.

If you embrace change rather than run from it, you’ll be fine.

To your success,

Dan Lok

Kickstart Your Copy Career With AI

AI is literally taking over the online space…

In recent times we’ve seen AI write sales copy…

Create amazing images…

Create music, and much more.

In fact, I’ve been using AI in my business for a long time in the form of chatbots and other software apps.

But today, we’ll focus on what AI can do for your copy career.

If you’re already a copywriter this email will help you use AI so you can do market research and finish copy projects faster.

If you’re not a copywriter yet, but want to get started, this newsletter will open your eyes to the possibilities of what AI can do…

And I’m also going to help you get the AI to write you simple forms of copy you can give to prospects to kickstart your copy career.

But first…

What Is ChatGPT?

There are many AI softwares online that can help you write copy, but one of the most well known is ChatGPT.

I’m almost certain you’ve heard of it by now, but if you haven’t, it reached 100 million users just two months after launch.

ChatGPT is trained to follow instructions, and this is why you want to pay close attention to this newsletter.

Because if you give it the wrong or bad instructions the information or copy it gives you won’t be any good.

Why ChatGPT is a Trap For Young Players

So can ChatGPT really produce mountains of copy faster than a human can write one email?

Yes, but as I mentioned above, you have to know what you’re doing.

I can see a lot of people wanting to get into copywriting and thinking the AI will do all the work for them…

So they log into it, ask it to write a few emails and give them to their new client, only to find out the emails didn’t perform well.

You must know how to write good copy BEFORE you use ChatGPT, or you’ll never know if your copy is any good.

But that doesn’t mean if you’re brand new to copy, you can’t play around with the AI and see how it works, etc.

How To Use ChatGPT For Market Research

Before you start any copy project you must know your market inside out.

You must know their goals, aspirations, pains, problems, roadblocks, and obstacles, and more.

And while in the past you may have had to search the internet for hours looking at forums, Facebook groups, online reviews, etc, ChatGPT is a very easy way of finding out the important info in mere minutes.

In this video you’ll discover >>

  • How to use ChatGPT to find out where the biggest demand for products is in the digital marketing space…
  • How to identify the ideal customer for the digital marketing space…
  • How to figure out the biggest pains and problems of people in the digital marketing space…
  • What the biggest trends are in the digital marketing space…

Now, there are an endless number of things you can instruct the AI to do for you, but…

You can literally copy the prompts used in the video, and switch out ‘Digital Marketing’ for a niche of your choice.

PRO TIP: A lot of copywriters hate market research, and just want to start writing, but market research is the most important step. Without the right information, you won’t know what to write and your copy won’t convert.

How To Use ChatGPT To Write Social Media Posts

Now you’ve got the right information about your target audience, you can begin asking the AI to write copy for you.

Ensure you’re still in the same window because the AI remembers everything you’ve asked it.

When you’re ready, click here to watch how to create Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter posts >>

Prompt the AI to write the posts for you and you’re welcome to keep what you like and change what you don’t.

How To use ChatGPT To Write Sales Emails

Whether they be sales or value emails, every online business needs email.

And now you know how to use AI to write social media captions (another form of copy every online business needs)…

In a moment you’ll discover how to write a sales email using the AI.

As with social media and other forms of copy, there are many prompts you can give the AI, but as you’ll see in this video, the prompts don’t need to be complicated.

These videos are mainly to serve as a guide to give you ideas on what to ask the AI.

How To Write High Converting Cold Emails With ChatGPT

If you plan on reaching out to businesses with your free copy work tailored to their business…

You’ll need to know how to write great cold emails that get opened and responded to.

In this video the presenter gives various prompts to produce a good cold email he’d be happy to send out >>

It also shows you how to prompt the AI to keep what you like and change what you don’t and shorten the email so it’s easier to read.

He also covers how to get the AI to write subject lines.

In closing…

There are some writers who should be very scared of AI, and some who will always have a job.

Ultimately the AI is programmed by humans, and although it can learn a lot and very fast, there are some things it likely will NEVER be able to do.

For instance, it will never truly understand the pain your target prospect is going through day to day.

It simply can’t relate to that, and that’s not the only thing it can’t do.

I wish you all the best in your current or future copy career.

To your success,

Dan Lok

P.S. – FAIR WARNING: Your time for getting into copywriting could be running out.
If you don’t act soon and begin developing the copywriting skill, by the time you do, AI will be light years ahead.

This will make it even more difficult to get into the industry.

If you want to ensure you’ll always have a job as a copywriter, click here to check out our range of copywriting training >>
